Tips for Kittens and Cars
Question: Okay, Mike, myself, and the kitties are moving to Seattle. Though it's not for 2 months, that doesn't mean I'm not stressing now. (I'm good at stressing.) We'll be driving up (I don't had the heart to put my darlings on a plane) and it's a 20 hour drive. (oh geez) Has anyone done a long drive like that with cats? Wanna give me any tips? I'd appreciate it! I figured we should get them used to car rides (besides the Vet) by driving around the neighborhood, increasing the drive time each time we do it. Anybody got anything else? I'll take it! Answer: Are they harness trained? Or used to a harness at all? You may want to get them used to walking around on a harness and leash, because you may want to stop and let them stretch their legs a bit, you know, around the same time that you and Mike stop for food or potty breaks Answer: I was waiting for them to be done with shots until I tried the harness. Oliver got his final shot today and Annie is getting her 2nd in 2 weeks. I like that though. Movement is good! Thank you! Answer: Shortly after I got Arwen I took her with me down to Maryland to visit family. I bought a small dog crate to give her room to stretch out (I felt her usual cat carrier would be too small) while in the car, in it I placed "Mimi" (don't laugh my cat's "blankie" has a name-yes I'm a dork) for her, along with all her favorite toys. I also brought her collar and harness, making sure she had proper identification on at all times, and I also bought a few of those disposable litter boxes so she could do her "business" if need be. I also had a small little cooler for her food and water. Answer: Did she "mew" the whole time? Mine are car mewers, though Oliver only made noise once on the way home from the Vet this morning - which is like 1.5 miles away. Answer: Actually Arwen was quite mellow on the ride, but then again that could just be her. Answer: So only one person has done the long car ride with cats? Yeah, it doesn't sound like fun. But on the plus side, both Oliver and Annie are totally used to their harnesses. Answer: The longest I've had the cats in the car was about an hour...as my guys have gotten older, they've gotten more relaxed about car trips, so I would imagine that as long as you put your kitties in a big enough crate and get them used to being in the car, they should be fine. Answer: Do they each have their own carrier? If so, maybe you could get a bigger one for the trip, and put them both in one....it might help them keep calm if they're right next to each other and can cuddle. Answer: I like the idea of a super large carrier. They've gotten really close so I'm sure that would help them. Thank you, sweet ladies! Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
