Gross Fur-Help!
Question: Cub is active, friendly, eating & gaining weight again, but she still drools a LOT. I have accepted this as a fact of life. In any case, she is clearly uncomfortable about the stiff, crusty fur on her chin, chest & belly where the drool has gone. She likes to have it scratched & she grooms a lot. She also has taken to eating all of the fur off her hind legs. They look very bare & bony now. She has not broken the skin. I am wondering what I can do to make Cub cleaner & more comfortable? She will not tolerate baby wipes, she sprays them. Is there anything else I can do? Could I get her shaved under anesthetic or is that a bad idea? Answer: Sounds like poor Cub has taken to fur chewing on her hind legs. All I can recommend is frequent dustbaths and you can also groom her with a comb (the steel fine toothed ones). Answer: Can anything be done to stop the fur chewing? Answer: Furchewing can be from environmental stress or genetics....my guess is that she's stressed out. Do you know why she is drooling so much? Has she seen a vet? Chances are, nothing can be done about the furchewing...all you can do is try to make her more comfortable and that means seeing a vet and figuring out your options. I have a chin that used to furchew...he has recovered from that...for Phil, it was due to stress from the petstore's noisy birds and constant pokings...Since coming here, having a room for JUST the chins and having a quiet and routine life, he has stopped and is much happier.
