Any ideas on how to put the weight on a thin chin?

Question:
I have a hetero beige male who at 11 months weighs only 400gms. I got him from a friend and he was eating Sunseed Pellets and Hay. I switched him a few months ago to Mazuri pellets and Oxbow timothy hay and he has neither gained or lost weight. He feels thin to me and I think he should be weighing more than that...any idea how to get some weight on this guy? Otherwise, he is very healthy.

Answer:
big mac with cheese!
(just kidding. I don't know what to tell you. I couldn't resist)

Answer:
I'm thinking maybe some Nutrical could help???

Answer:
Yeah I agree, Nutrical works.

Answer:
Is he getting any type of grain supplement?

Answer:
Here is the recipe I use.

Answer:
If he's still the same weight now after you switched him on higher quality feed and hay, he may just be a small chin. I would try some grain supplement but don't feed him fat just to put weight on him. If his fur is lustrous and thick, his eyes look shiny, his teeth and all look fine, he is probably just a small chin. Oversupplementing is as big a problem as malnourishment.

Answer:
I got an oat supplement recipe consisting of:
2 parts rolled oats
1 part Gerber Mixed Cereal
1 part powdered Milk
1 part Wheat Germ
1 part Pearl Barley
This recipe came from several breeders that I trust so I am going to try that. Phil is an exteremely active chinnie and he is healthy, but it may be that he is burning off the calories faster than they are going in. He is getting the supplement a few times a week as a replacement of his treat. We'll see how it goes

Answer:
That sounds like the recipe that is used when kits are pulled early from mom for some reason.
I use oats as a feed supplement, and nutrical once in awhile if a chin is boney.

Answer:
Interesting...I wasn't informed that my kit who was handfed should have it. She is about 9 weeks, but I'll have to check her pedigree to be certain. I'll have to ask her breeder about that. I was under the assuption she shouldn't have it until 6 months of age...
