Oh NO not again! (WARNING: Graphic pictures)
Question: This morning I woke up to a horrible mess. It looked like a bloody massacre. Freddy's foot callous cracked open again. This time I wasn't there to stop the bleeding. I am at my wit's end with this. I don't know how much more of this Freddy and I can take. The vet has said last time I took him in that if it doesn't stop he will have to be operated on and have his callouses removed or perhaps even his leg apputated. He has a large vein that is too close to the surface and it bleeds way too often. He may have to spend the rest of his life in a melamine cage with no shelves at all. Nothing he can climb or jump on. This makes me so sad. He is such a beautiful, loving boy. Sorry for the graffic pics but I just want you all to see what I am dealing with on an ongoing basis. Answer: Oh my goodness Pam, what a horrible sight to come into the chin room to see!! I'm so sorry you and Freddy are going through all this. Best of luck on whatever decision is made. Answer: That's not a fun job! I'm sure that Freddy appreciates all you do for him, though, and I hope you will know which decision is the right one for you to make when the time comes to decide what to do. Answer: Oh Pam, that looks bad, my heart would have hit the floor if I had have seen that!!! maybe amputing the foot woould be the best, we all know they can live normally and happily with 3 feet and its hard for you guys to have to continue to deal with this!! I wish you guys the best of luck and I sure hope he gets better Answer: What a horrible thing to find amputating a whole leg just for a callous seems a bit harsh If it was me I'd try removing the callous first. Answer: they would amputate the whole leg???? why not just the foot!! Answer: I asked the same thing when Tinsel broke her foot and the vet told me he would take out the thigh too. The vet explained the the scar tissue that would form on the foot would not be strong enough to support pressure. Basically, the skin could open and bleed all the time causing concern for infection, bone exposure and blood loss. The bone could also poke through the skin. If they amputate at the hip then the chin does not have the instinct to use the leg, the bone is not putting pressure on the skin and theyre is no exposed skin to tear. Basically pam would be stuck with the same problem except with poor freddy missing a foot. Answer: wow!!!!! it makes sense but I never thougth of it!!! Answer: I can't belive so much blood can come from such small animals. I would have dropped dead of fright I think. Good luck with Freddy (and you). Answer: It is actually not the foot part that is sore but at the back of his foot or heel or ankle bone. What ever it is called, the very back part of the back foot that rests on the ground. They would have to take the whole thing just like Sophie has mentioned or there wouldn't be enough support for his leg. I really hope it doesn't come to this and that they will be able to so something with the callous but he has most of the bottom worn away to the bone so whether she will be able to leave it intact and working properly will be the issue. His whole joint is enlarged as well so she doesn't know if she will be able to save it. We have just been hoping that it will right itself with the foot soaking and applying the balm to it and that the inflamation would go down but it hasn't. We will see what she has to say tomorrow.
