Poor Char Char has a boo-boo

Question:
well, charlie apparently had an accident while i was gone and now he has a boo-boo.

jim said he noticed it earlier but didn't say anything thinking it wasn't a big deal. men!

anyways...i noticed cause i went into the room and noticed cat hair clumps on the rug. not big clumps, but little tufts. so i look at charlie and he has a completely bald area between his shoulder blades! at first i thought it was from him scratching there so i looked at it and there is only one big scratch down the middle of the spot. so i don't think he was scratching at it.

so i put hydrogen-peroxide and neosporin on it to keep it clean, gave him his UTI pill and left.

i just went back in there (it's been about an hour) and noticed his collar laying on the floor. it's the kind that have an elastic piece for safety (the elastic breaks or stretches enough to let the cat out of it in case it gets hooked on something). well, the elastic is completely gone. i hadn't even noticed if he was wearing his collar or not earlier because i was too concerned about the boo-boo. i guess the collar was under something or hidden and i didn't see it and he brought it back out.

so i'm thinking that he got hooked on something and scratched himself and the collar broke. i don't know what else to think. i will post pics of everything in a bit.

should i be doing anything else besides the hydrogen-peroxide and neosporin? i just can't understand how all the hair came out.

ok, off to take pics...

Answer:
ok here are the pics:

to give you an idea of where the boo-boo is:

with the flash:

without flash. see the small red line in the middle of the bald spot? that's the scratch.

hope this helps you all to see it.

Answer:
Poor Charlie! It's amazing what our kitties can get up to just to cause us gray hairs! I can't recommend anything else you can do - sounds like you're on the right track with the hydrogen peroxide and the neosporin.

tell me about it!

Answer:
Aww, poor Charlie! I hope his boo boo heals up nicely.

Answer:
thanks, denise!!

Answer:
Yep, sounds like the collar didn't break properly and he had to scratch his way out. I'm glad that he's okay. The wound looks a bit nasty but it will heal quickly...especially being back there out of reach for the most part. Only use the peroxide for the first day or so and then clean with saline. The aggressive cleaning of the peroxide can actually delay healing.

update:

first off - i bought him another collar and got the snap away kind this time.

but more importantly: he has ANOTHER boo-boo!! it is right by the corner of his mouth and looks exactly the same as the other one (just smaller). it took me a while to figure out what it was (or what i think it probably is). at first i was thinking, ok...he has mange or some other desease. but then i remembered that one of his favorite things to do is to rub his gums all over everything to mark his scent. well, i think he did that someplace sharp and scratched himself again.

but...because of the hair loss and the fact that he's done it again (and also because his poos are a bit runny), i'll be making him an appt with La Doctora once again. he's lucky i like to spend money!! lol!

i'll let you guys know what happens.....

Answer:
Good luck at the vet. In his panic to break free, he may have scratched his cheek as well.

Answer:
candice - i don't think it occured on the same day cause i would've noticed.

and besides;
i just noticed that his new collar is gone and is nowhere to be found. what the heck?!?!
