grr.....
Question: well, i thought charlie was done spraying, but i guess not. background: i took charlie into my house in late dec of 04. he never ever sprayed and always used the litter box. then about a month ago he started scooting and sprayed 3 times in the house in different places. i had just started letting him out and about in the house (used to just be in my bedroom). i figured it was 1 or more of 3 things: 1. marking cause of dogs/new environment, 2. UTI, 3. anal glands needed to be expressed. well, it turned out he had a slight UTI, so i got him meds and he stopped spraying, but he still scoots. well, today he sprayed in the bathroom (one of the places he had before). GRR!!!!! i'm still concerned about his scooting and i'm a little concerned about his scratches. so i'll try and take him in to the vet soon (was going to for the scratches, but they are getting better). do you guys think this has to do with the fact that he accidentely escaped outside friday? he snuck out the doggy door and was out all day (came back that evening). i know he likes to go out (but i'm too scared to let him). thanks for listening! Answer: I have no idea...you know about my experiences with cats! Jus thelping bump this thread for you! Answer: peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeopllllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllle? i KNOW there has to be some cat people on here! come on! Answer: Sorry, I never encountered your problem. I don't know either Answer: I'm sorry too. I haven't ever had a spraying problem with my kitties and I think its because they are indoor cats. I bet Charlie is just so used to spraying outside, he does it in the house too. Did you take him to the vet yet? Answer: where the heck is Sue when you need here?!?! I bet she'd have an answer for you! Answer: Here I am!! I'd say if the UTI is totally cleared up then it's most likely is due to Territorial behavior.. which is going to be hard to change. I'd say he probably needs his anal glands extracted which is causing the scooting behavior. Answer: Jane, is he still doing it? Answer: I'm with Sue on the anal glands thing. Max has his expelled every now and then but he almost always scoots. Our vets are not concerned as long as the glands do not swell or become blocked. He's a bigger cat so it is more difficult for him to clean back there. The spraying is definitely a territorial thing. I know of an older cat (10 years) that started spraying when the family moved into a new home. He had never sprayed in the old home but he decided that he needed to mark his things once they moved. Have you considered Feliway? A lot of people highly recommend it for behavioral problems. http://www.ceva.com/corporateuk.nsf/FO_Menu/DCDB04E355239D00C1256ECF0052C3ED?OpenDocument&Expa nd=2.4 Answer: We use the Feliway Diffuser in each of the cat rooms in the shelter.. (we also use the Canine Diffusers in the dog rooms).. I think it helps to calm the cats but its kind of hard to defiantely say when there are 30-40 cats in each room... it's worth a shot though.
