I just had a quick question. When your chinchillas have babies how long do you give them the half cranberry juice and half water mixture?

In my limited experience, just for the first day or so. It is to replenish fluids and some believe that it helps the mom's milk come in.

Make sure that the cranberry doesn't have added sugar. You can also use apple juice if she won't drink cranberry.

I've only had two litters here, so my experience is limited. With the first one I gave a separate bottle of the cranberry mixture for about the first three days because the dam was small and seemed to be struggling to feed just her one kit. With this second litter, the dam seemed to manage with three kits easily and I just left her alone with water. As a loose guideline, I would watch how the first feedings go, and if the dam seems to be having difficulties, add the cranberry mixture in a separate bottle for up to the first week.

I use it for 2-3 days but I change it several times a day. Cranberry juice if left out for long time goes sour. I prefer the natural cranberry juice from health stores as well(no additives). Plus the upside to cranberry juice is it has natural properties that help prevent bladder infections. After birthing kits, an infection can happen, so I have been told. I personally haven't had any chins get bladder or urethral infections. Knock on wood! All my chins get bottled spring water here to! lol I don't trust our city tap water, and refuse to take any chances with my chinnies! I know I'm crazy! lmao

I use bottle spring water for my chins and there's nothing wrong with our water, I just perfer the spring water for them and they seem to do better. I do not think your crazy.

We generally use it for 4-6 days but we change it in the morning and at night. We also keep a regular water bottle on the cage.
