Question:
Has anyone got experience with any of the fancier litter boxes? We have three cats, one of which is really too big for the standard pan style. We currently use that with the regular scooping litter, but have been thinking about splurging on one of the cat boxes that uses the clumping litter and you have to roll it to separate the clumps for cleaning, or even fancier an electric one that combs the litter at certain intervals. Anyone got any input on this? Thanks.

The rolling one isn't all it's cracked up to be. It is quite small inside and wet clumps usually stick to the bottom of the pan. Also, you go through a lot more litter. The Littermaid is good from what I've heard.

The rolling litterbox is the Omega Self-Cleaning Litter Box. I used to sell them so I know that they work very well for most people, provided that you roll & dump as frequently as possible. There is a little drawer that collects the clumps & you dump them.
The regular sized Omega is small but there is a larger model available for larger cats/multi-cat households.
The place I worked for sold a litter that worked very well w/ the Omega, so I haven't heard any problems re that, & I sold a lot of Omegas.
I don't use one though because I don't mind scooping litter & a regular box is waaay cheaper than the Omega.

although i am in australia and we don't have littermaids over here... i have heard stories about how some cats have been in the tray when the combs were cleaning it out and cats have got there legs caught under them... just what i have heard so i'm not sure.
you might like to try getting one of those deep storage bins from a hardware store... it would be bigger than the usual litter tray.. breeders over here use them for their stud boys who sometimes spray over the top of ordinary litter trays... so they use these because they are deeper.

We went with a plain and simple GIANT cat box with regular clay litter. I was concerned about the cats' legs getting caught, plus the cost of the fancy ones is a bit much for us right now. Hopefully this will work for the big cat.

I know some people who use the large, shallow Rubbermaid storage containers (the clear ones) for litter boxes. They have many more cats than you but if the box you are trying now doesn't work, it may be worth a try.

I tried the covered boxes but one of my cats wouldn't get in. Instead, I took off the cover and just used the base of the box. Because it is quite a bit higher than the normal litter boxes, it helped with the mess. So, I guess you could try the covered box and if it doesn't work, just use the bottom.

i went to my local MFA, they have just the covers available for like $11...heck, you can buy a covered box for that at the stupidcenter!! i guess i will buy one, take their otehr box ut for a day or so, and see what happens. if they like, i will get another. if they do not, i will take off the top and se if it helps any. i did not realize they were taller in the base. i wonder if the collars that i ahve with my regular box will fit if i have to go that route.
