Hair Ring Checks

Question:
Do you all still do them? I check but my boys never seem to have them, is that normal ... am I checking right?
I actually do it by myself, quite the challange but after I give them a play time so their not too mad at me, LOL.

Answer:
I do check for them and I have found them, although it's not something I would attempt to do by myself.

Answer:
It is definitely a two-person task. I'm sure if I had to I could do a check by myself, but I can't see it as being very easy to do alone. I haven't found any yet.

Answer:
From what I understand, they are more commmon with males in a breeding program.

Answer:
Diego can give himself hair rings. I check once a week when I weigh them. Sometimes there is a bit of hair there, sometimes there isn't. Make sure to retract the penis all the way.

Answer:
I've never found a hair ring on my non-breeding males. On one breeding male I found one...he's fathered 2 litters. I think some are just better at taking care of it themselves than others but yes, all my males are checked weekly during cage cleaning and weighing

Answer:
Since I don't weigh every week, checks around here are far less frequent. Hmmm, Sophie, now I can see why female chinchillas appeal to you.... :P

Answer:
We do checks about once a month, more often if the boys look like their cleaning a little to often. Its pretty rare even in our breeding boys that we find a ring. We did have a trio of males that would get them constantly. I rarely weigh anymore either...maybe once every other month or so.

Answer:
I check once a month unless I see a boy cleaning himself on a frequent basis then I check when I notice. I have found two hair rings that the chins would not have been able to remove themselves. Both were breeding males.

well that's one of the perks but I also get only females because I have no intention of breeding and do not want any "accidents" happening Had Tinsel not come along and I found a male that I liked, I would have bought him. Btu we got a female so now I'm sticking to that
