litter box odor problem

Question:
Hi,
I have three cats and I keep their litter boxes in our spare bathroom. I'm very concious of cleaning them on a regular basis, but I have noticed that no matter what I do to keep them consistently clean, an odor always lingers. I am constantly buying products like air fresheners and sprays, but I find that they simply mask the odor. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could buy or look into that helps make the odor dissapear for more than 30 minutes and helps keep the air fresher?
Thanks for all of your help!

Answer:
What type of litter are you using? We use a combination of World's Best cat litter and those silica crystals (to absorb the moisture) and it seems to work very well. We change the boxes completely after about 1.5-2 weeks because the litter gets "old" and does work as well. When we change the litter, we wash the box and then we sprinkle a layer of baking soda on the bottom of the box to absorb odors and I think it works. The litter goes on top and then we are good for a week or two.

I have been considering the Litter Locker for our litterbox. It works kind of like a diaper genie for the waste. We usually just use a plastic bag for a night or two and then take it to the trash.

Answer:
You could try using a box liner so maybe the box won't absorb the odors between changings.

Answer:
I also have three cats and I find that mixing Yesterdays News litter w/ a clay litter works really well. The paper pellets absorb a lot of moisture and the clay absorbs smells quite well. I also do the layer of baking soda on the bottom when I clean them out, I use arm & hammer cat litter deoderizer. I scoop out the litter boxes quickly everyday and empty them once every two weeks.

Answer:
With my cats we use the crystals and I forget which brand of litter, we also sprinkle baking soda in it every few days.

Answer:
Wow I'm going to have to try the crystals. We have 4 cats, and I scoop the box out twice a day and do a complete change every 6 days approx. I find the ammonia smell really overpowering by that time. Baking soda doesn't seem to help

Answer:
I'm using yesterdays news for my four now, scooping the poops daily and changing the litter completely every two days. So far the smell has been minimal.

Answer:
Arm and hammer makes a product that you can mix in with the litter that eliminates the odor. You could try that but some cats are too sensitive to the scent.

Answer:
Hey Alex32,

I have had practically the same experience as you have. I was always buying the good smelling sprays, in addition to trying litter liners, new crystals in the litter, and many other types of products. I did some research online regarding air purification and I found these lightbulbs called Ozonelite. They are reasonably priced and they actually are constructed in such a way that they purify the air and kill odor causing bacteria in the air. I plugged my bulb into the wall where my litter box is and it's been smelling clean ever since. Another perk of the bulb is that it lasts much longer than the average light bulb and produces quite a bit of light. I hope you give them a try, I think they are well worth it.
I hope that helps you!

Answer:
Wow, a lightbulb that helps w/ the smell? Do you have a web address? I need one of those.
