Cage Wire Question
Question: Hi all, my boyfriend and I were out shopping for materials to get Pocky's cage built, and we could only find one type of wire! Which is the kind we used to fix this cage, and we both feel that it's just too small and makes his cage seem very closed in and tight. It also makes it hard for us to give him attention through, and opening his door after play time would just mean a great escape and chase I'm not sure of the technical terms, but the wire we have is .5" X .5" wire mesh, and we were looking for 1" x 1" or close to that. Unless of course that's just all wrong, then we'll have to reconsider, but it's not big enough for him to get through that's for sure We want his new cage to have a more open feel so he's a little more comfy and can feel less caged. The question is, if they don't carry it at home depot, where else could we find something like that? Just any old hardware store? This is our first home built cage, so we're a bit anxious to get it right the first time and not throw 100$ down the drain! That's a 100 I could be spoiling pocky with Answer: I would go with the 1/2"X1/2" wire. Especially since your boyfriend seems very concerned with the mess that Pocky makes. Answer: If Home Depot doesn't have it they can usually order it for you. If you don't want to wait you can check out Rona, Home Hardware, Builder's Warehouse... ummm, I'm not sure what else there would be in your area but you could just scan through the phone book and see. 1" sounds fine if it is only for the walls. If you are using wire for the flooring it should be something smaller (don't want to get their toes stuck). Another thing to check for is not only the size of the wire spacing but the gauge. The gauge is how thick the actual wires are, anything to small and it can easily break, anything to large and you need industrial strength wire cutters. Good luck Answer: He's over the mess these days, it just took him a while to become jaded towards it now he just lets me clean it up without getting on my case (thank GOODNESS) so it's been a lot more peaceful. The only thing he has a problem with now is if I forget to clean it up by the next morning! Rince, it's just for the walls The floors will be solid so they don't have to worry about their little tootsies! But thanks for the tip on the guage! I actually wouldn't have given that a whole lot of attention, but you're totally right. I tried to edit in a picture of the wire that i've got on hand now (which is what pocky's cage is made from) but it always tells me i can't edit after 10 minutes, even when it's only been less than 5. I chalk it up to bad luck, so here's the picture a bit late! it's definitely strong enough, but I find it too small and makes him look very cramped. Answer: Answer: Yeah, I've got acrobats too, Chyna defies gravity So I prefer the 1/2" wire, but have got some with 1". It's purely preference to me, if it just for the walls Answer: i use 1/2 by 1/2 as 1 inch can get their feet caught and then break their legs...i have hear d a few stories... Answer: I found some really strong 1/2" x 1/2" heavy gauge wire at a feed and farm supply store. Do you have a Co-Op store close to you, they have stronger gauge there. Answer: i am desining my own run at the momant and i trying to think of solution to this probleme. i was wondering if may be a perspex wall instead of a wire wall if you drill some holes in and smoothed off to let some freash air in it may help them lose the cagey feel. i would really like your comments so tell if you think it's a good or a bad idea. Answer: scythe, perspex is just plexiglass or such right? I'm not familiar with the term, but a carpenter had suggested that to me! On one hand I think it's a good idea, and on the other I think maybe it wouldn't let in *enough* fresh air. It's one of those things that's hard to tell for yourself without seeing it first. I think the only serious issue with something like that is if the weather gets too warm, they'll roast in a cage like that. But again, that's just an educated guess. I might see how he feels about the 1x1 wiring, but you guys are right, I don't want him hurting his little feeties. How about 3/4'? Is that just as bad, or is it an inbetween solution?
