Diabetes....

Question:
Well, i just got home from the vet.. had to take the dogs for their rabies vaccines and took tobbie (my cat) cause of his UTI... well after they cleaned his ears and clipped his nails, they got a urine sample.... well, yes, in fact he does have a uti.. but thats only the second concern... the first concern is that they found sugar in his bladder... now i know what this means, possible diabetes (im hoping its diabetes and not anything worse, like kidney failure or something) ... i have to call tomorrow to get the results of his blood tests... more than likely this is what it is (since he has lost 7 pounds)... now im wondering, does anyone elses cat have diabetes? cause i need to know how to care for him... i know about the insulin injections but thats all i know... ..

Answer:
You will have to be very strict about rationing meals for your kitty and you will need to feed at least 2 meals per day. Generally, it is a very treatable disease so try to stay positive. You said that he lost 7 pounds? Losing extra weight usually helps to kee the diabetes under control.

Keep us posted. I will be thinking of you.

Check out the link I gave in the above thread.

I'm sure he'll be fine

Answer:
he was, in fact, diagnosed today as a diabetic.... i have to bring him in monday to stay there 3 days so they can regulate him ... then i get to learn how to give the shots

Answer:
The shots are quite easy. I've had to administer a few insulin shots and they are really quite fool proof. Good luck with your kitty. It sounds like he's in very good hands.

Answer:
Good luck with your cat!

Answer:
Check with your vet about a low carb/protein diet. Many people have had great success with being able to greatly reduce the insulin given, and some have completely gotten their cats off insulin. There is lots of great info out there singing the praises of a "Cat-Kins" diet. Good luck with your kitty.

well i dropped tobbie off on tuesday for his stay at the vet... and he just came home today .. i guess on wednesday he had a seizure but hasnt had one since, so thats good... i have to give him 2 shots a day and have him on special food... which has to be fed before his shots so in a sense, i have to put everybody else on the same feeding schedule so he doesnt eat anyone elses food and they dont eat his... he didnt even seem to notice the shot i gave him a little while ago... now, i have to show my mom and boyfriend how to do it so they can when im at work (every eight hours at 8:45 he has to get it... that seems the most reasonable cause that way i can at least do it once... but yeah, so hes doing better... hes up to 14 pounds now so i have hope
