Question:
I know it varies, but what are the weights of your female chinchillas before they are pregnant and what's the weight while they are pregnant? About how many grams do yours gain?


Answer:
Hazel is around 575 or so, not pregnant. When I was chin-sitting her, I think she got up to almost 700 grams with her first litter. She was also pregnant when I eventually adopted her and was just over 700 grams with her second litter. Both times she had two kits.

Raven: 670g before pregnant and weighs 922g (with two weeks still to go in her pregnancy)
Sydney: ~570g before pregnant and weighed 724g when she delivered...she had two kits.
Cassie: not pregnant is ~650g
Nala: not pregnant is ~660g (she is pregnant now but not due until april 28th so we will wait and see what she gets up too)

It all depends on the chin and how many kits they are having, and size of the kits, previous pregnancies etc.
Cassie was 620 before getting pregnant, she is now 846 grams with 2and a half weeks to go. I'm estimating triplets because she looks like she swallowed another
Chinnie whole
Savannah was just 605 before getting pregnant she has put on approx. 160 grams with 5 weeks still to go.
This will be first litters for both of these chinnies.

You should also test the female's pelvic opening. The space between the two sides should be at least the size of an adult thumb (called the "rule of thumb") to more safely deliver kits.

Priscilla gained 235g when she carried triplets - babies weighed 142.6g combined
She gained 195g when she carried twins - babies weighed 110.4g combined and
she gained 153g when she carried a single baby who weighed 45.4g.
The other females seem to follow this rather closely.

I really should take a picture of poor balloon shaped Cassie, but I feel so sorry for her, I don't like to disturb her.
