Pickle's Trip To the Vet

Question:
My poor Baby.

Pickles was all the way at the back of her carrier when I picked her up. Everything went well. She weighs 6.5 lbs (kinda neat since she's 6.5 months old) and healthy.

I'm very impressed with the vet. I'd heard she hated cats from one person, but I hadn't heard good things about the other vet in town. I am liking the one I chose. She has cats as well, so she must like them.

I had to go back not a half hour after being home because Pickles started to lick and pull at her stitches. Poor little thing. She is mad to have had the surgery and even angrier at the cone she must now wear.

How long should she wear it? I am thinking tomorrow, once she isn't so dopey I will take it off her and keep an eye on how she's doing. If I see her licking them again...well I will have to figure out a way to feed her...

Meeko keeps trying to play with her, and she won't have anything to do with it. But he seems to now understand she's not in the mood. Actually, when she got home, his furr stood on end and his back arched up.

Tomorrow I'll feed her...I'm wondering how to feed her the pill...her treats are squishy...I wonder if I can get her to eat it that way.

Answer:
I just got up (5:45 am) and took the cone off...she doesn't want to eat she just wants to lick. but she'll pull on the threads. They seem a bit long but I don't want to cut them. I'm not sure she even laid down last night...poor girl.

Answer:
I would leave the cone on, even if she hates it, until the wound is healed. Did the vet give you any indication as to how long it would take to heal? Licking at the wound and pulling at the stitches is going to make the healing process longer.

Answer:
Well she has to go back in 10-14 days to have the stitches removed...so I don't know if that's how long it'll take.

I had to fight with Pickles to take the half pill this morning.

Answer:
Poor Pickles, I hope she heals fast, I have to agree with mollymitten I would also leave the cone on until it heals.

Answer:
You should ask your vet for a 'pill plunger'. My vet gave me mine years ago and apparently now they're selling them. They make pilling a cat very easy and stress-free She's prolly picking at the stitches because they're pulling and itching her. I wonder why the vet used traditional sutures? My guys always had internal dissolvable stitches and I think surgical glue on the incision itself.

Answer:
I don't know. Small town vet? Apparently people used to have to take them out themselves. At least that's what I heard.

How does she eat with that cone on? Or drink? I'm worried if I leave it on for the 10 days she'll starve

Answer:
Could you take the cone off just long enough for her to eat and drink periodically through the day while you're home?
I can't imagine trying to remove stitches from Isobel - she screams bloody murder most times I'm just trying to clip her nails

Answer:
Well I called the vet to check it out and she told me I could trim them a bit so I did. Now what I do is just take the cone off for a bit...she finally ate something. She can drink with the cone on as long as the bowl is nice and full.

Answer:
That's good that she's eating and drinking now Poor wee girl, but she'll be healed up before you know it.
