How often should I small dog eat?

Question:
My dog doesn't like dry dog food. I don't really blame him...if I was a dog I would never put that crap in my mouth. So instead of dry food, we give him meat muffins. They're all organic and loaded with vegetables and other good things. He seems to like them...

I was wondering how often should he be eating? He's a bichon frise and he weighs about 15-20lbs. We feed him at around 6:00pm everyday and that's it. Is this enough? Some days he doesn't even touch the food. Sometimes he'll eat only half of it...other days he eats the whole thing. Is this normal?

Answer:
I didn't think a bichon firse was supposed to weight that much. I just looked it up and they're only supposed to weigh between 9 and 12 pounds

Look around for some high quality wet dog food. Also, try feeding him 2 smaller meals during the day.

Answer:
You could also try mixing high quality dry food with high quality wet food.

Answer:
I'd switch to a high quality dry food mixed with canned food. Feed your dog at least twice a day (just divide the daily recommended portion so you are not over feeding him)..
It does sound like he is overweight, unless he is a bichon mix... I have a Pomeranian mix so she weighs more than most Poms (14 lbs)
If he is overweight, I'd reduce his portions somewhat and give him more frequent & longer walks everyday until the weight comes off.
Good Luck!

He's probably lighter than 20lbs. He's actually pretty skinny. I was just guessing his weight.

Thanks for the replies.

Answer:
*coughs* Hmmmm.....not sure on this one

Answer:
I agree with feeding mixed dry and wet high quality foods. There has been lots of posts on good dry dogfoods of choice.. When in doubt the vets are usually happy to let you know (or their vet assists) over the telephone.
Mollymitten?
BTI...?

Answer:
Uh huh

Answer:
It's important he gets SOME hard food for the sake of teeth and gums. Your vet would weigh him at no charge, I am sure, and then whatever food you decide on would likely have recommended serving size per weight either on the package or on their website- and take into consideration mixing wet and dry.

Answer:
Remember that the guidelines on the dog food package are for your pet's ideal weight. If they are overweight don't feed the amount for that weight catagory.
