Help with shedding

Question:
Hi all, I have a very large mixed breed dog with a terrible shedding problem. He is shedding now in late fall as bad as he did in the spring. He never seems to really stop shedding. Can any one give me some tips on how to help him?

Answer:
Can you give us some insight on the type of food you are feeding? Sometimes lower quality diets results is massive shedding problems. Switching over to a higher quality feed often solves the issue. I'm sure some diet knowledgeable members would be able to suggest some options for you.

Answer:
Just as Solarsis mentioned, diet can play a big role in excessive shedding. I've also heard of people saying that giving their dog a fish oil supplement has helped. The other thing too that comes to mind if this is a fairly new thing with him would be to have his thyroid level checked. Dogs with hypothyroid can shed excessively.

Lastly, I have one of those mixed breeds that sheds constantly and all year round. I've tried everything with him and found the only thing that works is a good brushing every couple days.

Answer:
I feed my dog ProPac Senior he's 12 years old. It's a chicken and rice mixture that i get at the pet shop. He has shed like this his whole life. My house has always got hair everywhere. The pet shop sells a food additive for shedding that i was thinking of trying, but he is a picky eater and may refuse his food.

Answer:
I've got a heavier shedder too who is close to 14 years old. A diet change greatly helped, but sometimes it just depends on coat type. She still sheds, just not quite as bad. Regular brushing (or sometimes plucking) is all you can do sometimes.
