King Shepherd

Question:
Anyone heard of or seen this breed? My good friend has one and I LOVE him. We took care of him and his "sibling", a 22 pound Springer Spaniel, over the Christmas holidays and they are coming back this weekend for a visit.

For those who haven't seen the breed, here's a link.

Answer:
King Shepherds are AWESOME!!!! I hope one day when I have a bigger yard, that I can own 1..or 2...or 5...lol I didn't realize how much BIGGER they are than a German Shepherd til I saw one in person...but still VERY VERY COOL

Answer:
They are HUGE! The one that I know is 125 lbs. He is in fabulous shape and such a strong dog. I'll have to take pics once they are back here.

Answer:
Awesome dogs! I love big huggable dogs like that. They are so gorgeous!

Answer:
I've only seen one King Shepherd before...
You should get a picture of yourself with your friend's dog so we can see the size comparison. How old is he? Is he full grown yet?

Answer:
I will definitely try to get a pic of us. He is 8 years old, so full grown...and huge!

Answer:
King Shepherds are not really a breed in itself, something like the White Shepherd. They have their own misc. class. I've seen many of them, they're simply oversized Shepherds that were bred over and over until reaching this large size. Although very pretty to look at, the extra size plays havoc on these dogs. Their backs give at a very young age, arthritis sets in the overloaded joints, etc. I have been talking to breeders about them and they said they were becomong a trend but very unhealthy.

Answer:
This is true with most breeds that breeders has made teeny-tiny or extra big. Neither is for the betterment of the breed but they are good looking dogs none the less.

Answer:
I agree, they are great looking. And I almost made the mistake of buying a Shiloh until my vet explained everything about the health issues. I would rather have the standard shepherd who will live till maybe 15 than have the big beautiful one who will be dead by 8 yrs old. I find it too hard when I have to euthanize a dog to go through this that early. But yes, they are gorgeous dogs.

Sorry, I shouldn't have used that terminology. This "breed" is not recognized by the AKC as a breed.

The dog that I am referring to is doing very well considering his size and age. I LOVE big dogs but you're right, it's too hard to say goodbye to them at such a young age.

A bit off topic, but not really, I am starting to think that a shepherd is a breed that I will consider once we are ready for a dog.
