Beating my head up agains the wall AGAIN
Question: Yeah that time of year my mothers dog has yet ANOTHER litter of puppies. Theres 8 of them she had them back near Thanksgiving and you guessed it shes thinking abut keeping "a few of them" . I have offered to have her girls fixed she refused, She now says shes going to but she toldme that before this is the 4th litter in three years, they let the pups run wild the adult dogs are tied to log chains and have dog houses food and water and she WONT quit. The father is neighbor dogs who let there dogs run. Ive had homes lined up for the last time and she decied that she wasnt going to get rid of them, two weeks later they were dumped at the pound for "bitting" my dad, yeah pick them up by the scruff of the neck dogs that arent socialized at all see what happens yet the next day not a mark on him. I could SCREAM and she wont listen ive even tried turing them in nothing can be done about them ARGH. Answer: This sounds familiar. I work with a guy whose dog continually has puppies and he is always furious when she gets pregnant. Well, a female in heat tied up 100% of the time in the backyard is going to attract some males, don't ya think?? Anyways, I have repeatedly told him to get her fixed but no. Won't listen. Slap-able? Absolutely. Unbelieveably stupid if you ask me. Answer: Would your mom be considered a backyard breeder? Does she sell pups for money? If so, report her. That'll change her attitude real quick. Or better yet, take the to the vet yourself and have her fixed. I bet your mom wont want her after that. What goods a dog that cant have puppies, right? Then you could find a good home for her.... Answer: Actually No my mom's not a "breeder" persay, she does not have a male she does not plan to let her dogs get pregant and she does not sell the pups. The father dog is usually a stray running dog or a neighbors loose male. I think they truly LIKE there dogs there just complete opposities of how I feel dogs should be, they think outdoor dogs are the way its suppose to be. They have all there dogs confined to there property so feel its not there responsiblity if they get knocked up. And if the HS isnt going to come out for dogs needing help what else is there to report? Dont get me wrong I HATE the way they treat there dogs but theres nothing "wrong" in the HS eyes UGH. They have 4 females and truly could careless if they DONT have puppies they just wont wake up and do it themselves. As for me taking them I know you probably dont know the history but thats not going to happen. Trust me ive done all in my power to have that happen but its not going to, I even went as far last time to go the hour to her place tow ork on socializing the pups spent hours posting adds fidning homes only for her to change her mind. Im basically just venting at this point lol. Answer: Christy, that has got to be extremely frustrating for you! I don't know if your mom will actually listen, but could you mail her articles on pet overpopulation, numbers of animals in shelters, euthanasia rates, etc? I'll pull up some articles for you if you'd like. So she's going to keep all the puppies? I guess if she's keeping all of them then she's not technically abandoning them to be picked up by a shelter or rescue group. Do you think she will ever get tired of looking after so many dogs and give you a chance to get them out of there? How many dogs is she allowed to have on her property, is there a limit where she lives? Maybe you could offer to 'babysit' her female dog and get her spayed at a low cost clinic? Answer: Diana, No she NEVER keeps them all she wants them when there cute little puppies then they end up wild and she dumps them at the local shelter drop off at night ARGH. Ive talked to her till im blue in the face and she wont listen, ive showed her websites told her about puppies being PTS and the whole nine yards. My relationship with them is a teniouse one at best. As for me babysitting her female shes got 4 of them all totally outdoor large dogs at one time I offered to get them spayed at MY COST and she refused even offered to do transport and care till they were recovered she refused. Unfortuantly I cant do that now no money no way I could bring her four unhousebroken unmannared dogs here. She wont listen to me ive tried over and over and over. We got into a fight one time where i said id come take them she told me shed have me arrested for taking them off her property and I dont doubt she would have. As for the laws im not sure how many are allowed shes completly in the country and no one ever checks out that area even with complaints. Answer: Are all the dogs properly fed and sheltered? Are any of them suffering from disease? Are the grounds cleaned (poop etc) and kept in good condition? Is the area fenced and the dogs contained? If any of these things exist, call the humane society and have them check it out. Not to offend you, but your mom sounds pretty irresponsible and you should do whatever you can to fix the situation. If that involves removing the dogs yourself or reporting her, then do it. She is a backyard breeder. Though she's not making money at it, she is contributing to the pet overpopulation and is costing someone money, either for care or to have them put to sleep. If she is dropping animals off at the shelter at night then as far as i know, she is avoiding the 'drop off fee', so let the humane society know. Answer: I know you are not find of your mom Christy and I know you dont agree with what she does,,,sometimes theres not a whole lot you can do ,,I knwo you have contacted the HS more than once and they wont do anything,,, as for her fixing the dogs and then finding them a good home,,that will be an excuse for her parents to get more unfixed dogs,,she cant keep doing that for the reast of her life is there any way you could coax your mom to go itno the HS with you?? maybe that would be a rude awakening fr her??? Answer: Shadow how do you say I go and get these dogs off her property without her permission? Yes the dogs have propper food/housing/ and are confined to there property? Do I find my mother at fault YES do I find her having 24/7 outdoor dogs a good thing NO, Our HS does not have a drop off fee. I do have to say that the dogs are friendly and are not sick and they have taken them to the vet when there sick. I find fault with the neighbors as well who let there unaltered dog run loose at least I have to say my parents do keep there dogs on there property. Whats there to report? Besides ive talked to HS nothing they can do or care to do since the dogs have the minimums. Do I think it SUCKS they let there females have puppies YES is there anything I truly can do? NO. There is nothing I can do to "fix" the situation I live an hour away I have done the best I can in talking to her trying to get HS to do something but nothing is "illegal" , ive tried placing the dogs ive offered to have them fixed before at my expense (cant afford that now) and ive been threatened that taking the dogs would result in ME in Jail, that wouldnt do any good for the dogs or my pets or my kids. Feel free to come down and fix this yourself if you can. Brandy ive tried to get her to go to the HS with me even under the impression I was looking for another dog (I need another dog like I need a hole in the head lol) but she wont get out of the car told me to go in myself. Your right as well when I grew up they'd get one dog tire of it and another would come in a month later despite me begging them to not get anymore dogs, If I could id take all the dogs in and find them loving homes but not possible. I do what I can for them I bring them treats when I come visit and last time I cried everytime I walked away from the puppies knowing there was nothing I could truly do, this time Ive seen the puppies once and for my own heart ive stayed away. Answer: I dont understand how, if the dogs are confined to the property, these other neighbour dogs are getting in and impregnating the females? Or is it that they are confined by being tied up - there is no fence around the property? Okay, the original posts made the situation sound worse than it is. If the dogs are cared for, thats a good thing. You said they are tied to logs with chains? I dont know your background, so i dont see why there would be a problem going on to your moms property and taking the dogs. But it sounds like you have no alternatives but to take matters in to your own hands. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
