Another Dog Attack

Question:
(NB-Dog-Bites-Girl)
An 11-year-old New Brunswick girl will need stitches and dental work after she was bitten in the face by a dog.
Cassie Clifford was bitten Thursday by a dog owned by a neighbour in her apartment complex in Rothesay.
The attack took place just one day after the province announced it will hold public hearings on legislation that would restrict some dog breeds. (New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal)
As an animal rights activist, I always try to see the dog's side in these incidents. The Chronicle-Herald says that the dog's owner in this case told the girl that the dog was friendly, & when she knelt to pat the dog, the dog sunk his/her teeth into the girl's face.
I'm not sure what to think, but I know I wouldn't own a dog these days.

Answer:
That poor little girl!! Was the owner there when it happened? I saw briefly on the news last night a story about a young guy who saved his friend who was attacked by a german sheppard. That's not the same story, is it? God, that poor girl -- I can't even imagine the terror of seeing something like that coming at you
I hope they charge that creep who told her the dog was friendly

Answer:
The dog has been quarantined while a decision is made on whether it will be put down. (New Brunswick Telegraph-Joural)

Answer:
what kind of dog was it Neuro?

Answer:
A Rottweiler-Great Dane mix, according to the Herald.

Answer:
A German Shepard attacked two boys in Soutern ON somewhere. Saw it on the news today. Apparently he jumped a fence and attacked the two boys who were waiting for the bus. They fought him with a skateboard but one boy was bitten pretty bad and is in hospital. Scary stuff...

Answer:
The problem is some people really believe their dogs are friendly. They miss cues that the dog is giving showing it is unsure of a situation and most importantly they don't learn doggie 101 psychology (sp?). Dogs will be dogs and owners need to be held accountable.
For instance, you hear all the time parents bragging how safe their doggie is and little Johnnie can ride on his back and bounce up and down on him. Yeah it is cute until the boy hits an arthritic spot in the dogs hips and it turns around and bites their child in the face.

Answer:
I am extremely careful with Dante around people, especially kids. While I have not witnessed any aggression, he is EXTREMELY playful and could easily injure someone if they were not expecting it. He is getting much better at not jumping up on people, but I am always worried he will knock someone over or over-enthusiasticly play nip someone. And with the way people are around here that could mean his death. Oddly enough there were some kids that came around a few weeks back and asked if I wanted my dog walked. I wonder if their parents realised they were doing this? I told them Dante wasn't good with kids. The only kid who Dante is fine with is my little cousin. But Jake (my cousin) comes from an animal family and has been taught how to react to anything/everything they may throw at him. And with Cerebral Palsy(sp?) it's especially important. But most kids today don't know how to act/treat a dog, never mind be it's supervisor. Woo, boy did I go off!

Answer:
I agree with Brenda (CTChin).. I've seen so many dog owners that 'think' their dog is the friendliest dog around.. and its so obvious to us (shelter employees) that the dog is showing signs of aggression or they're under-socialized (that's a common one!).. They just don't know what signs to look for... Up until the point that their dog bites them or someone else, it was just one close-call after another.. alot of warnings that went right over their heads! It's a shame.. b/c the dog is the one punished (or euthanized in most cases) b/c the owner didn't do the proper socializing as a puppy.. I know that in some cases, it's a matter of bad breeding.. and nothing the owner did or didn't do causes bad behaviour but the responsible thing to do is recognize it and put their own feelings on the back-burner and realize that their dog is a ticking time-bomb.. and deal with it before the dog hurts someone..
