Anyone have a dog on phenobarb?
Question: Our one Pom, Tuffy, was just put on phenobarbital for seizures. Does anyone else have a dog that has been on this, long term?? ANy tips or insights? Answer: I know of some members who've experienced seizures with their chinchillas but I can't think of any who would have a dog in the same condition. Answer: My first mini dachshund has been on that for a little over a year because she has epilepsy. It has really helped her. I have started giving her Nu vet plus antioxidant supplement, and that helps over 50 serious diseases and problems like cancer, broken bones, heart problems, allergies, skin problems, and alot of other things. Answer: Wow, the supplement sounds great, Doxie. Do you mind sharing a link, or some more information. BTW, welcome to the forum. Answer: Sure, I can give a phone number where it can be ordered. You can even give it to cats, and people can take it as well. the phone number is 800-474-7044, and the order code is 43026 Nu vet labs actually gives a percentage of their income to animal charities, vets, etc. Anyway, here is some information about it: It is called Nu Vet Plus first I will have to say what free radicals are...... free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that have one or more unpaired electrons in their outer orbit. they continuously attack the cell's membrane, and the membrane begins to weaken and break down. this weakening will eventually lead to allergies, skin and coat problems, tumors, cancer, heart and vessel disease, cataracts, arthritis, digestive problems and low energy. of course the body makes a defense against free radicals-mainly antioxidants. antioxidants act as police, neutralizing free radicals. this supplement will purify blood, make your pets fur look healthier, and will even help your dog or cat live a longer life. It removes the dangerous things your pet eats when it gets a sub quality food. Basically it helps with anything related to the heart, organs, and bone-say, if your dog breaks a bone, it has been known to help quicker healing. it even helps improve digestion. This isn't supposed to be a miracle drug, but a wonderful supplement for your pet throughout it's life. BTW happy to be here! Answer: Awesome! Thanks. Answer: you're welcome! Answer: I had a chinchilla on phenobarb. Not sure how much help that can be but I thought I would mention it. The main thing to watch with an animal on phenobarb is liver performance. The way it was explained to me is that the meds work by accumulating in the liver and being released over time. This can cause some liver damage with long term use. Also, animals on long term pheno treatment can develop resistance to the drug and require other seizure control meds with more serious effects. Just keep an eye on your pup and bring it to the vet as soon as you notice something odd is going on. Keeping a log of seizures (when they happens, circumstances, types of seizure activity, duration, etc.) can help your vet dtermine course of treatment, whether or not resistance is being built, and other things.
