Henry has some owies

Question:
Henry has a few very strange sores on his back. They are maybe loonie-sized. They aren't deep, so I don't think a raccoon could have snuck into our yard and bit him. The fur is not rubbed off around the sores, so I don't see how he could have rubbed them there. And he can't reach them since they are on his back. Has anyone ever seen something like this?

I first noticed the sores a couple of days ago, but I wanted to watch them a bit since he doesn't seem to be in pain, and I couldn't take him to the vet anyway because my car doesn't work. But I finally made an appointment for early tomorrow morning when my husband will be off work and can take him in his car. I hope he's all right, and I hope we don't get a giant vet bill (that's just what we need to go along with the hundreds of dollars worth of car trouble we've had in the last couple of weeks!).

Answer:
Could it be hives? How many does he have?

What about a spider bite? I know Brandy's dog gets quite swollen from spider bites due to allergies, but maybe a non allergic reaction would only cause what you are describing? These are just some guesses. I'm sure you vet will be able to tell you more tomorrow. Keep us posted!

Answer:
I don't think it could be hives or spider bites because they are open sores, two or three of them spread apart, not just swollen lumps. My husband changed the vet visit to the evening because he is meeting his dad to look at my car in the morning. How could he choose the car over the dog?

Answer:
The vet tested for mange, but thank goodness it's not that. It's a bacterial infection, probably started from a small cut. They shaved the area on his back and we (we, meaning my husband) get to clean it twice a day and give him antibiotics for a while. He'll be fine!

Oh! And he weighs 53 pounds now!

I need a bit of advice here. Last time Henry was on antibiotics (which was when he got fixed and had his dew claws removed), giving him the pills hidden in a peanut butter sandwich worked great. This time, he's wise to that trick and won't touch them. Any suggestions of what else a dog would like that would be safe for him?

Answer:
What about cheese? I know quite a few dogs who would kill for cheese....or maybe a bit of cold cut ham?

Answer:
I'll try. Thanks!

Answer:
I like the hot dog route,,,,,cut a hot dog in half and you can usually push the pill into the center of the hot dog
