Diesels barking
Question: Diesel wont stop barking when I let him outside to do his thing,I know he hates the neighbours(cant blame him) but is there any sugestions what I could try, thanks Answer: This article has great advice (minus the suggestion of some types of choke collars). http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Con...=1&SourceID=47 I have never had a problem barker so I don't have any first hand experience. But I'm sure someone else will be along to help out. Answer: we live in a subdivision and joey and pippin seem to bark at all kinds of stuff ( mailman, neighbor, cats, squirrels etc etc) we use a squirt gun in the house when they get going, i usually let them bark a couple times for warning then tell them no bark, if they continue i squirt them with water, joey is good, if he sees the squirt gun come out he stops but pippin requires a couple of squirts first he he Answer: I wish a squirt gun would work, but Diesel would love it ,he would think its time to play, thanks Answer: For you, I think that distraction training would probably be best. Once he gets out and starts barking, call him. When he comes, have him sit and tell him he's a "Good boy" and then give him a little treat if you'd like. I think this technique was covered in the article that I posted. Others suggest saying "No bark" and then holding the dogs muzzle closed gently. I'm not sure that I like this technique but I'd like to hear what others have to say about it. Answer: thanks,I will try anything,my neighbours aren't animal people and I know they tease him,but I don't want him disturbing the other half decent people around Answer: Same problem here, except my neighbours have never done anything to my sheltie. She just won't shut up, when she is outside she is barking at nothing. I have found just putting some water in a spary bottle and giving them a squirt right in the face seems to help. It distracts them long enough that most of the time they forget to bark. Answer: Is the dog barking at the neighbors when they are outside or just at their house? I would teach the dog the "quiet" or "shush" command. When the dog is barking, call his name & when he looks at you, tell him "quiet".. as soon as he stops, say "good quiet".. & reward with a treat immediately (later just use lots of praise). People always yell Quiet over & over but if the dog doesn't know what that word means then its pretty pointless. Answer: Candice, that particular technique is supposed to mimic a mother dog correcting a puppy (if I'm not wrong). It does not necessarily work with all kinds of dogs. I use it with Lavander after she gets out a good 3 or 4 warning barks (I put my hand on her muzzle, not hold her mouth closed) and she quiets down. If she's really extremely excited then she doesn't pay any attention to the hand at all. I usually trust her instincts, if she doesn't stop barking it means someone she doesn't know is trying to get in the door and she won't allow it unless someone in the family says it's ok.
