Greeting another dog
Question: When you are out walking your dogs and you meet another dog being walked, how do you approach the dog and owner? Especially when your dogs get VERY excited and vocal about meeting other dogs. I usually say that mine are friendly and they just want to say hi, Keesha and Ally are not vicious in any way and do not bite. And usually the other owner will let me know if their dog is friendly or not. A few days ago, the other owner did not warn me about their dog when I approached them and the owner allowed Keesha and Ally to greet their dog and their dog grabbed Keesha by the shoulder. She was limping for a few minutes but she was fine after we got home, no torn skin or anything, just a shaken up dog. I might have to read up on training to get the girls to learn not to get so worked up when meeting other dogs, they bark and pull at the leash like little bulldozers. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to train a dog to ignore other dogs? Answer: I think the best idea is restraining the dog with the appropriate apparatus, such as a Halti or Lupi. Don't the Buddy Belts help with this? And there will always be a$$holes out there who will not inform you of their dog's foul temper. Poor Keesha!!! Answer: this is quite different but my sister n law was walking the caribou plains in fundy park with her university class one day and there was a couple and their german shepard approaching,,heidi being a huge animal lover asked if the dog was friendly,,,,,they said yes and when Heidi bent down to pet the dog,,,the dog bit her in the crotch.....Heidi doubled over and laid on the ground,,the owners thought the dog bit Heidi in the arm,,looked at her arm and said she never bit you,,and walked away,.,,,Heidi had to get stitches and a tetanus shot ,,she was bleeding and everything but by the time the blodd came through her jeans the owners and dog were already gone,,,they thought she was making it up Answer: Ally's Buddy Belt is on it's way back to me so in the mean time I walk them both on their old collars. The Buddy Belts did help a lot with their pulling, I hope I receive Ally's in the mail soon! Keesha is still friendly, thank god, I don't want her to think that every dog we meet is going to bite her. Brandy, that is awful, the owners could have at least given her a chance to show them the bite! Answer: Josh just picked up Ally's Buddy Belt from my old apartment! I will see how it goes with them tonight. Answer: I don't really trust other dog owners to tell the truth. My dog had another dog lunge at him (the dog got away from the owner) and it was the scariest experience. My dog is trained to ignore distractions so usually he will walk by other dogs without even looking. If I do let him meet other dogs, I make him sit first and let them sniff each other. I like to keep a tight lead because you never know how the other dog will react. I know it sounds really bad, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Also, I never let my dog approach another dog if my dog is off leash and the other isn't. Apparently, many dogs feel threatened by this. Usually I will just call him and make him walk with me until the dog is gone. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to train a dog to ignore other dogs? Hi Clearjade: I find that rewarding my dog with freeze-dried liver when she performs a behaviour I want works. So, when your dogs see another dog, tempt them with a favourite treat, and tell them to sit. Reward them, and praise them. It can take a few times, but the dogs should respond to this method. Moxie loves other dogs. I know most of the dogs in my neighbourhood now, and always allow her a quick bum sniff and greeting so she can stay current with the local doggy gossip! Answer: I am going to get some of that freeze dried liver treats this weekend and try it out Answer: Clearjade...the best ones are BENNY BULLY's...dog's will do absolutely anything for those Answer: Exactly the brand I had in mind I've got to pick up some grooming supplies for the girls (they are shedding like mad!) and more flea drops and there is a whole shelf in the store for Benny Bully treats.
