What food for your doggie?

Question:
We got our pup at 9 weeks and he was on ProPlan for Puppies. They really pushed the Nutrience food at the Superpet, but it cost more, and I didn't want to upset his stomach. I checked the ingredients on both and there seems to be little difference, they either have an equal amount, a little more, or a little less of each ingredient. They sell Nutrience in small bags too which is great for the last few days before a paycheque! So we switched him over. Of course now he has that diahhrea they get when they switch food, but he seems to really like the Nutrience more. The kibble is bigger and he seems to really dig it. Any thoughts on Nutrience? What do you feed your dog?

Answer:
I feed Nutro Natural Choice..

Answer:
Nutrience is a better food than Pro Plan in terms of ingredients. It does not contain by-products or ambiguous ingredients (like animal fat...which means ANY animal). It does contain the same low quality fillers (corn, brewer's rice) but there are fewer incidents of them.

The diarhhea is probably a sign that you have switched the food too fast. It should be switched over a period of at least 2 weeks, I prefer closer to a month.

It is more expensive but with less filler, the feeding guidelines indicate less food. This is because the dog doesn't need as much food to get the proper nutrition. My dog would eat 6 cups of regular Purina formula but on the food he's eating now, he only eats 2 3/4 cups per day.

Up until recently, Taz was on Canidae Platinum. However, we can no longer get the
Platinum formula here. Now he is eating Foundations Senior. I highly recommend both. Foundations is a Canadian food and quite affordable.

Answer:
I've seen Canidae in a few (better) Pet Stores.. but I don't think I've seen Foundations before.. around here anyway..

Answer:
It is sold in 4 stores in Ottawa according to the dealer locator.
http://www.petcurean.com

Berrys/ Your Petschoice (Beachwood and 2nd Avenue locations)
Natural Pet Foods
Pet Valu

It is a western company, in BC, so that might be why it's more abundant here. Though I only really shop at one store.

i KNEW somebody here was using that! i've been seeking a good, inexpensive dog food for Lucy (who isn't picky and has a hearty system so does well on just about anything) and they had some natural choice in the discontinued aisle in the commissary...(which means it may be that size, or that label, or who knows what was discontinued) so i bought a bag...going to begin switching over next week...though we're going to petsmart tomorrow for cat food, mazuri for franco, and more aspen so i will probably buy more (just to stay stocked up, lucy's a hearty eater )

Answer:
You'll have to let us know how Lucy does. Taz was fed Nutro for most of his life and did well on it. I found that the Canidae cleared up the dry skin he was having and I think it was probably the lack of corn that helped.

Wouldn't you know it's the stores I've never been to! I do shop at PetValu but not that location.. and Natural Pet Foods, I never even knew there was a store on that street (I'll have to check that one out!)
Thanks for the link Candice!

Answer:
Callie has been on ProPlan her whole life but tomorrow I start the switch to Nutro Natural Choice!

Answer:
So you are switching...that's cool, Amanda. Keep us posted. I hope that it goes well for Callie.
