Contacting the owners of our apartment to get permission for owning a dog....

Question:
I am really nervous about asking the owners of our apartment if we can get a dog. I don't know why but I am. They were nice enough to allow us to have the chinnies and now I am thinking we are taking advantage by asking for a dog. I am wondering how I should contact them, telephone, letter, or in person? In person, I will probably end up getting nervous, telephone I don't know if I feel comfortable asking over a phone and with a letter I know I could express myself the best but again I can't see their reaction (then again maybe I don't want to).

Sorry just getting agita over this.

Answer:
Ooo, that's a tough call... Do you see the owners much, or is it more that you see them when you need something?

If you see them regularly or often, I think in person would be a good idea, and also the easiest... However, the fact that you're having a bit of a dilemma over this suggests that you don't see them that often.

What was the general policy regarding pets that they had in place, again?

I think the best way to bring it up is to sound casual, as if you won't be extremely disappointed if they say no.

Good luck

Answer:
Okay, maybe I'm weird, but don;t the neighbors across the hall have 2 dogs?? Or Did I miss understand the whole thing...

Answer:
Thanks Bex. Lizz, no, nobody has a pet in the apartment.

Bex, we rarely see the owners. The only time we see them is when they collect the rent or there is an emergency. Our lease says "No more pets without permission".

Answer:
I think a letter would be best. It is not rude or rushed as a phone call would be, and seeing them in person would make it seem like too much of a confrontation. That's just my opinion, though. Good luck with what you decide.

Answer:
I would also recommend a letter in this case. That way you have a paper trail in case you need it in the future.

Answer:
A letter it is!! I can express myself better on paper. Now I just need to get their address.

Answer:
Just a suggestion.... If you are going the letter route, be sure to express that you are planning to get a purebred dog (I don't know why, but to the undereducated public, purebred always seems to mean "better"), and that you plan on obedience classes (if you are) and puppy socialization classes (if you are), and maybe reference your veterinarian's name. Play up that you're a very responsible pet owner, and that you are taking every step to make your new dog a great dog to have in the community.
Good luck!

Answer:
good ideas, green!! i hope that it all goes well, denise!

Answer:
Michelle,

Thanks for the tips. Yes, I was going to emphasize we are going to get a purebred dog. And I am hoping I can one day bring the dog to hospitals for dog therapy. I plan on including that in the letter too.
