clipping?

Question:
i am thinking about getting lucy some kind of boddy clip before our move. we will be going in the car and have decided not to use her kennel in the car, as it would be more comfortable for all if she slept in the floor board or in the seat (not enough room for her crate in the seat)...but with as hot as it's going to be, driving across the southern united states in august, i'm thinking she might be more comfortable if we get her clipped..

she is a basset hound, but i never knew bassets had SO MUCH hair! she has an under coat like a water retriever! nearly like wool under her outer coat...i swear we brush her every day and get an entire dog worth of hair each time!

so, what do you guys think? think it would be a good idea? more trouble than it's worth? too weird looking? (not really all that concerned about her looks, it's her comfort that concerns me the most)

i saw what looked to be like a golden retriever cross pup (probably about 7 months old or so, a big pup!) who had like this body clip with just a strip down his back that had hair...and i have to say, he looked cool! and not in the fashionable sense

Answer:
My co-worker shaves her Golden retriever down every summer (much to my managers annoyance) and my friend does the same with her Belgian shepherd. I've often heard that their coat keeps them cool (insulates them from the heat?).. not sure how much of that is true though.. usually groomers will say that. You may want to ask a dog groomer or I could ask another co-worker of mine that used to be a groomer (for you)..

Answer:
that would be great!

i'm reading around on bassets and her hair is nothing like they describe! lol...they say short, stiff hair that is easy to keep groomed..well, she's easy to brush, not long enough to tangle or matt but there is definately a really dense undercoat..so looking at the breed standards for bassets, i'm thinking she's not a whole basset :P not that it matters, but with as thick and dense as her coat is..and her ears are long and floppy but still not quite as long as basset ears, they hang just to her shoulders, maybe a touch past..and her nose seems a touch sharper, and not quite as jowly...the haw isn't nearly as pronounced as with the breed standard basset photos i've seen...

she's proper height for a basset, and proper leg length...her feet and legs appear to be 100% basset, she just isn't as loose skinned and is much thicker coated..so i'm trying to think what the cross may have been...but heck she could have just gotten dealt that hand of cards that gives her the mostly basset characteristics! but she is much mroe active than i've ever thought bassets would be!

Answer:
we shave joey down every year to just his undercoat, he loves it !!!!!!! he has the most beautiful red silky fur all winter and i hate doing it but he is much cooler,

Answer:
well, we took lucy today to the groomer and got her a summer clip...she looks so cool! they left her tail and she wouldn't tolerate the shears on her head so there's a blunt line from he rneck to the back of her head but it's not so bad...but she looks so much more comfortable and seems a lot happier...except..her sides look nearly blue, like a roan thing, and she has this very black stripe down her back! it looks almost like a mohawk! it's cool!

and the rust stains on her dewlap are gone, from her collar gonna have to get a new collar that doesn't do that as soon as we get to san diego
