American Staffordshire Terriers/Pit Bulls

Question:
Dave and I went to a pet expo today and got the opportunity to interact with many different breeds of dogs. As some of you may or may not know, I have this incredible connection with Pit Bulls and always said once we have a house I would be adopting one. Luckily, there was a non-for-profit Pit Bull organization and I put my name on a mailing list so I could be updated on rescues for adoption. They had several puppies up for adoption and of course I had to hold one and wasn't able to put it down. So precious!
Then as we were on our way out we stopped through one of the booths in which we already visited and there happened to be an American Staffordshire Terrier. This girl was a championship winner and the lady that breeds them has 5 generations of championship winners. Dave and I talked at length about the breed and asked the breeder a lot of questions about her breeding program. Let's just say I was extremely impressed and got a positive vibe from her. She said she is extremely picky about who she sells to because of the fact the breed of dog is used for fighting. She breeds her females only once a year (kudos to her!) and only breeds to top notch males. We were able to get her contact information and she told us when we are ready to give her a call. The female we were petting was so lovable and her tail was wagging a mile a minute. She was a real sweetie! The breeder said (believe it or not) they aren't very good watchdogs. They bark if a stranger enters the house but they eventually warm up to whoever is in their presence. She said their looks intimidate people more than anything.
It is so upsetting when I hear about people fighting these dogs. If anyone has a negative image about Pitties or American Staffordshire Terriers, all they need to do is get acquainted with a well-bred, well-socialized animal and they will see they are not the monsters people make them out to be.
It looks like I know which two kinds of dogs I will have when we have our own house.

I love Am Stafs. They are a good breed I've found that they are quite smart, and alot more loveable than you'd think!

Answer:
My family had an English Staffordshire Terrier when I was growing up and since Max I am very partial to that breed.....He was so gentle and loving ,and very smart..He lived to be 15 and when he died my whole family was devistated...I see that square head and in max's case, those short bow legs and I just think they are adorable....I did an online search and found not many people breed the English Staffy...Much to my surprise one of my customers actually does and she brought me pics of him at shows...maybe one day I will have aone again.....Suzan :P

Answer:
Any dog can be a biting, growling terror when not properly socialized. I've seen some chihuahuas on the bus that bite their owners and my superintendent's daughter has a chihuahua mix that snaps at the slighest thing.
The pet show sounds like great fun, Denise! There is a pet expo coming in April here in Toronto and I can't wait to check it out!

Answer:
You're absolutely. I just lost my 14 year old Staff Terrier. He was the sweetest, most loyal, protective, gentle animal in the world. It broke my heart to lose him and I still think of him everyday and cry often.
I also have a 1 1/2 yr. old Pitt that I found in the parking lot at work. No one wanted her because she's a Pitt. I brought her home and has been a part of our family since.

Answer:
I love all dogs...Pit Bulls included.... My neighbour is getting in trouble cause she has a pitbull. The thing is though, the dog is doing NOTHING....

Answer:
To me it all depends on the owner. If the owner trained the dog to be vicious, then it will be. If not, then its a sweetie.
I work at a kennel where we see many PB's. Some are sweet, like that little puppy we had here called Cooper. Now one that left called Ace was as mean as anything. You couldn't get near him, nor open his cage. We have pit mixes too like Daisy Mae thats here now; what a sweetie!!! I know she would never harm anyone!
To me, its all the stories that get around & hearing about so many attacks on the news. I know I'm guilty of it sometimes, I have to keep telling myself the dog is nice & won't harm me. Its such a shame that these types of dogs have a bad reputation cause some can be such good dogs! You never hear of a Cocker Spaniel or a Golden mix; its always a PB, Rottie, Cane Corso, the Canary Dogs, etc. Its a shame really.

Answer:
Tomorrow Dave and I are going to see the breeder we met at the Pet Expo to see their pups. I can't wait! I can't wait to see all their adult dogs too. I may not be able to leave their house!

Answer:
Are they Am Staffs or Pittbulls? We had an Am Staff the other day at work.. what a difference.. we usually get alot of pitbulls but not true Staffies...
