Best age to neuter a dog?
Question: We plan on getting Logan neutered at 6 months. Is this a good age? We are taking him to the vet for a physical on September 23rd so I plan on asking the vet then but wanted your opinions too. Answer: I got joey neutered at 6 mos, and pippin a little bit earlier, he was almost 5 mos. but the vet told me it was ok to do it a little earlier, and i have not seen any ill effects of it. Answer: I got Apollo done at 5 months....the vet told my aunt that she could have her beagle puppy neutered at 4 months... Answer: i know with horses you can get them cut as soon as they drop..no idea if the same holds true for puppies or not! Answer: My vet recommended anytime from 5 months. I think 5-6 months is a good age- they are young enough to recover quickly, but not so young as it is very disturbing to them to be away from you all day or over night. And you don't want to give them a chance to learn any bad behavior ahead of time- but yes- you do have to wait sometimes if their testicles haven't dropped. Not a dog, but my sister's cat couldn't be neutered until 9 months for this reason- and now Titus looks like he is going to be a late bloomer. Answer: Did I tell you that someone at Superpet told me that they are now neutering kittens at 6 WEEKS?? Answer: Yeah, pediatric sterilization is becoming more common. I'd personally wait til his testicles drop b/c otherwise it's more expensive as they have to go in and find them! (hehe) The norm is 5-6 months though... Answer: Kittens are ok from 4-5 months, Dogs are good at 5-6. Its when they are at earliest most developed as far as a neuter. Answer: We got Oreo at 2 months old, and she was already fixed... I guess the shelter may have done it so they could get her adopted faster but who knows... Answer: The vets around here do them anywhere from 12 weeks (common) to 6 months (not so common anymore). There are quite a few now doing them at 8 weeks, but not very many, since they don't have all of their shots yet, so most vets don't want the pups susceptible to stuff that may be going around the clinics. I say it would be best to wait until 12 weeks at least. When they do them at 12 weeks, what they did with our dogs was shots, nueter and microchip all at the same time.
