Acting on a tip, officials with the Larimer Humane Society were horrified to find 84 dogs packed into crates - some filthy, and most of them lacking food and water.
The woman who owns and cared for the dogs has fled Colorado, and investigators with the humane society are pursuing animal cruelty charges in the case, said Cary Rentola, a spokeswoman for the humane society.
Rentola declined to identify the owner, saying the case remains under investigation.
Investigators believe the woman was running a "puppy mill" or "backyard breeding" operation to sell dogs to pet stores.
The dogs, all Labrador retrievers, were found in rural Larimer County near Berthoud after the property owner called authorities Saturday, Rentola said.
Some 54 of the dogs were euthanized, including 34 puppies, because of poor health or behavioral issues, Rentola said.
"Many had not seen the outside of a crate," Rentola said. "They were in really bad shape. The puppies themselves were sick; there was nothing we could do to help them."
The dog owner had recently moved onto the property, where she rented a room from a long-haul truck driver.
She asked the property owner if her dogs could live with her at her new home.
The truck driver said yes, according to Rentola, and left on a trip.
When he returned, he was astonished to find 84 dogs, many sick and dying, she said.
After the trucker returned, the woman left a note saying she was leaving and not taking the animals, Rentola said.
The truck driver, who called the humane society, also was not identified Tuesday.
"It is very difficult," Rentola said. "Our staff is dealing with this, but this is not something we have seen before in Larimer County."
Humane society staff members will nurse the surviving dogs back to health before putting them up for adoption, Rentola said.
