Update on Dante's progress
Question: Well I am not sure if I mentioned or not, that Dante started basic obediance classes to help conqur (sp?) his leash aggression and hopefully go on to compete in agility. We've been through 5 classes so far (it went by fast!) and Dante is doing well. He seems to loose focus near the end of class, but it is a very stressful situation for him. Last class I got really frustrated with myself as I was directing him wrong, giving the wrong signals and when he got it right I would forget to tell him! Our worst thing is heeling, and ofcourse that was done at the end of class. He paid no attention to me, started pulling and barking at the other dogs as we would pass by. I just wanted to go home. However, today we went out to the park across the street and he FIANLLY seems to see the light and we are on the same page! We were actually working together Now if only we can keep this going and perform well in our next class It was so nice to finally see the progress! Answer: I'm sure he'll get better in class, good luck and I hope he won't give you any trouble anymore. May I ask what kind of breed you have? Answer: I'm sure he'll do better soon. Sounds like he's one smart cookie. Keep up the good work! Answer: Lizz - both you and Dante are smart people. If the classes are one hour long, then that is a long time for either a human or a canine to focus as completely as is required, so small wonder that by the end Dante has lost focus and you are frustrated. I remember it well from when I fostered a standard schnauzer. Have patience, and realize that if you have confidence in Dante he will have confidence in you. It sounds like you are both already well on your ways to being completely successful in this endeavour. Keep it up!! You can do it!!! Answer: Thanks for the support guys!!! I know we will get there. I guess I just feel bad for giving Dante a bad start. I've done sooo many things wrong with raising him and now I have to 'rewrite' his programing so to speak. But we won't give up! Pics of him are here: http://www.pets-on-the-net.com/forum...ad.php?t=17807 I also have a Rottweiler, Morpheus who will be starting classes soon too. Answer: I agree with MM, an hour is a long time to expect a dog to focus and stay on his best behaviour. He sounds like he is coming along just fine. Don't give up and keep working with him. One day it will all just click. Answer: yah for you for taking the dogs to classes! an hour IS a long time. penny's puppy classes were that long, but the last 10 min were just play time. that's cool that he's getting better. it will just take time. Answer: Thanks guys! Answer: Oh okay he's a nice looking dog, how do you think your other dog will do in classes? Answer: I think Morpheus will do very well. He is still going through his teenage stage so his focus is his failing. However he has no serious issues (like Dante's leash aggression) so once he learns to retain focus he should excell. Rottie's are notorious for being challenging and will test you everyday to see if you really do deserve their respect. I know there will be days when I get the 'make me' look. lol. But I look forward to the challenge and rewards of working with such an intelligent and devoted breed. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
