Changed dog trainers
Question: I signed Logan up for puppy classes with a personal trainer a couple months ago. I thought it was a good fit because the trainer has a Pit Bull. After talking with her on the phone last Saturday, I realized the trainer is not what I am looking for. I asked the trainer a question about puppies mouthing and the trainer asked me what kind of activities we engage in with him. Two of Logan's favourite activities are tug-of-war and wrestling. The trainer said we are encouraging Logan to mouth because of the activities. She said tug-of-war is not a good game to play with puppies because it is rough play and puppies think they always win because the owner usually tires out before the puppy. Now from all the reading I have done, and reliable sources, I know tug-of-war is a great game to play with Pits, (as long as the owner inititiates the game and ends it) especially ones that have a high drive, which Logan does. So, I sought the advice of a highly reputable Pit Bull breeder and she told me I may want to reconsider using the trainer. I found a trainer that comes highly recommended and we talked last night on the phone. She has owned Pits since 1974 and knows the needs of Pits and ones that have a high drive. She only has 3 more puppy classes left but said she would be more than willing to squeeze us in. Then we can start basic obedience in January which isn't too far off. I am glad I decided to look for another trainer! Answer: Good for you ! We always played tug of war with our puppies, and were told it was ok AS LONG AS it is started and finished with you and to not let the puppy win. Jan is only a few short months away, Have fun ! Answer: Good for you, Denise! Answer: I'm glad that you are finding a better trainer. Jen plays tug-of-war with Ki-Adi (akita/shepard mix) and we just always make sure to win. Answer: You got to do what is best for Logan, hope this one goes better! Answer: Good for you, changing trainers! I am going to school to be a dog obedience trainer/instructor and I can't wait for graduation! I am learning so much!! Answer: Kudos to you for becoming a dog trainer!
