Question:
I have a golden retriever who is 6 years old. Her name is Sable. Well recently she has been having trouble walking. it seems like her front leg is bothering her. shes walking a little better now. but for the past 2 years or so she has been licking herself soo much an scratching her self so much that she has no fur left on her legs face an around her eyes. her eyes are swollen shut. i dont think she can see anymore. we have taken her to the vet an he said she just has allergies an gave us some pills that made her have to go to the bathroom all the time. He also told my dad to give her benadryl. nothing seems to help. also she has been looseing alot of fur an with it being winter i dont think she should be loseing as much hair as she has been. if u pet her u will have a handful of hair in your hand. also around her face where she has no fur left there are dark black spots. also i have noticed a little pus like gooey stuff around her eyes.if anyone has any idea what it may be or have any ideas about what i could do to maybe help please let me know. I hate to see my dog like this.

hi there i am sorry to hear about your dog. i also had a dog which had the same problems, and after a year back and forth to the vets they finally took some skin swabs. it turned out that he was allergic to dust mites and now spend the rest of his life on steriods but it has worked. and he now has hair where a dog should have hair. it might not be dust mites it could be something elsethen dustmites but he is allergic to something. but either way keep going back or change vets. the sooner he is on steriods the sooner he will recover. hope this help keep us up dated on his progress and give him a huge hug from us all

It does sound like an allergy, has a screen been done? I would definatly go to another vet. This poor dog has suffered way to long. (2 years!!) Please get her help now.

I am wondering if the "medicine that made her pee all the time" might have been a steroid? I still would see another vet..maybe one that specializes in allergies. In Milwaukee there is a vet who advertises a free second opinion because they specialize in skin diseases and they say they can treat stuff the other vets can't.

Thanks for the help. Im going to tell my dad about get a skin test done on her maybe that can tell us more. altho sometimes she gets better an stops stracthing herself an when her fur is about healed an all grown back she starts back digging her face up again. i will let you guys know what happens.
