Nellie's potty training

Question:
nellie is doing awesome on her potty training,,she still has the odd accident but no biggie,,

Her big thing is night time, she sleeps in bed with us, but we dont feel her getting up,,,,she doesnt know to go to the door yet or bark, or scratch or do anything to let us know she has to go, she just kind of looks at me and wags her tail,,,LOL but she also does that when she wants food, petted, any type of attention,,but I know her well enough now to know when she has to go,,,ANYWAYS,,,like I said we dont see or feel her getting out of bed, so almost every morning we wake up and theres one puddle of pee and one pile of poop,,she does it whereever, sometimes in the living room, sometimes in the boys room, sometimes in the kitchen,,,sometimes in the hall,,but the poop and pee are never in the same room

It never bothered me at all,,i just get up, see it, clean it up, no biggie, know once she can hold her bladder longer, etc she will stop it,,some nights theres no accidents at all,,,,sasha went through this also, but she was smaller so we always felt her getting out of the bed, cause it took her about 5 mins to get the courage to jump,,,LOL then she'd hit the floor hard, we'd wake up and take her out,,

so like i said before, it never bothered me UNTIL THIS MORNING

I had to get up a 6:30 to make the baby a bottle, i only turned 1 kitchen light on instead of 2 and sure enough I stepped right into a big puddle of pee,,,,alright, no biggie, took my pants off, put my foot in the sink, washed it, cleaned up the pee,,,got the baby bottle, went back into my room, put clean pants on, fed the baby, no problem,,

THEN Tylor, the little boy Im babysitting and parents i think forgot about the kid, since hes STILL here since yesterday morning at 10,,,started talking really loud and he was waking the other kids up,,so i went down the hall to tell him to go back to sleep or atleast be quiet,,,,i walked down the hall fine *SURPRISINGLY, i didnt turn any lights on, so I couldnt really see that well* WELL coming back up the hall to my room,,,I stepped in something cold, mushy and stinky,,"ARGH" and i almost fell,.,,,ya know those shows where people slip on banana peels,,yah well that was me,,,except thankfully I caught myself,,,,,

so hobbling to the bathroom muttering a few choice words,,I come to the conclusion that THIS HAS TO END,,, LOL

Theres also a reason Im scared of the dark SO I SHOULD TURN THE LIGHTS on,,,,its just Im not scared of the morning dark,,,,if that makes any sense

so is there any way to teach her, pooping and peeing on the floor is still bad during the night,,,i dont even acknowledge that she does it,.,,,but should I be??? just showing it to her and saying "No" maybe????

i dont want to brate her and i dont want to have to make her stay in just 1 room,,her and Sasha both sleep in bed with us, and i want that to continue,,Craig does take her out when the baby wakes up but she still has the odd accident,,,

whew that was a long post,,so any suggestions?

Answer:
I really don't know any other way to prevent this from happening unless you make a specific time to get up and take her out, maybe like 3:30am, I know it's early but it seems like she must always has to go in the middle of the night. You could also make sure she goes poop and pee right before bed, we never feed Lil until 8pm, so then she has a big poop before bed at like 11pm and is fine until the morning. Would she stay in a kennel in your room, or would she maybe poop in that too? It's tough when you have a doggie who has a housetraining problem, but sometimes you just have to barricade them off for a while till they stop going to the bathroom in the house.

Answer:
I'm no expert with dogs but I have a feeling this is where crate training might come in handy.

That or is there any way one of you guys can get up half way through the night at the same time every night to let her out?

Answer:
Ugghhh! I would say this has got to stop if I stepped in it too! I hope you figure it out with her.

Answer:
well i really dont want to confine her,,,,Craig lets her out when the baby wakes up but since shes only having 1 pee accident and 1 poop accident a night, i think he may have to get one more time besides that,,,when we get up around 3ish, the mess isnt there so its happening sometime between then and 7,,,,

Ill TRY to get up but its scary,,LOL and Craig gets mad at me when i wake him up to do things ,,like get me a baby bottle,,,or nellie wants out,,,or dakin is yelling for you, or Corbin is thirsty,,LOL....but i dont like to get out of bed

Answer:
Brandy, how old is Nellie? When we got Logan, we took him out around 2:00 am and then again around 6:00 am. After a month he was able to sleep through the whole night without an accident. We also keep our door closed so if he were to get off the bed, he would be confined to our bedroom. I think the easiest solution is to get up during the middle of the night so she can eliminate.

Answer:
Crate training is a great way to assist with potty training since a dog that is properly introduced to their crate will consider it their den. A dog, even a puppy, will not willfully dirty their den.

Anyway, since there is no crate in this situation the only thing you can do is pay very close attention to the rhythms of your puppy.

A few basic assumptions:

A) You are controling feeding time.
B) You bring Nellie out before bedtime.
C) Nellie isn't doing the business in the house at any other time than night (and is, therefore, almost potty trained).
D) You are cleaning the spots Nellie has gone with a deordorizing agent (like diluted vinegar) since dogs will often go where they have gone before.

My thoughts - You'll need to be vigilant at night. Nellie is defecating at night and not learning that it is wrong or bad. Therefore, you'll need to be very aware of when Nellie gets up and you will have to get up as well.

Feed Nellie at least two hours before going to bed and don't leave water out.

Nellie may still need to go at night so you will need to be there when it happens. I don't know how old Nellie is now but as a general guide a puppy can hold it as long as follows:

2 months old - two hours without a potty break
3 months old - three hours without a potty break
4 months old - four hours without a potty break
5 months old - five hours without a potty break
6 months old - six hours without a potty break

And some pups leave it there others will hold it longer when they reach seven and / or eight months (seven and / or eight hours).

Really, the only thing I can think of is that you sleep lightly and make sure Nellie doesn't continue to go in the house at night.

Answer:
well the SPCA gave her a birthdate of Sept 1st,,,,,,nobody really knows for sure,,but I think shes a bit older than that,,she goes for her needles next week so i will ask the vet

she is 99 % daytime trained, and she never goes in the same spot twice when she goes in the house,,,lol,,,,Ive thought about shutting my door but I dont feel comfortable doing that with the kids being in their own rooms now,

on a side note,,,,Nellie didnt have any accidents last night at all,,,,Im not sure if or when Craig took nellie out, but I know I woke him up once to take her out and he said "i just did" i told him to do it again,,,,,,I was feeding the baby so i couldnt do it,,,the baby is up about every 3 hrs at night,,,so hopefully we can get control over this,,,it doesnt happen every night,,,,some nights nobody takes her out at all and she has no accidents so I know she can hold it,,,,,

Im thinking maybe I will put a baby gate in my door way, we have 2 spare ones anyways, that way i can still see into the boys bedroom but she will be confined to our room

Answer:
You could always put her leash on and tie the other end around Craig's neck.. then when Nellie sneaks off the bed to 'do her deed' he'll have to get up to let her out!

Answer:
hHAHA now theres an idea!!!!!
