Good thoughts needed please

Question:
My Bordercollie/blue heeler cross Tassy might have a bad cancer. I noticed last night her breathing was odd but having no emergancy vets and she was not panting excessively I made a appointment in the morning. We had her xrayed and there was fluid in the lungs. The vet said that she may have cancer taking over her lungs but to clear the fluid she wanted her on 3 different pills to rule out the possiblity of pnemonia. She has to be on them for a week but if its cancer she will have to be put to sleep as the vet said it would be at a advanced stage for her to be breathing as such. It kills me because right now she looks in pain. I wont keep her fighting for a week to see if its cancer if shes struggling. She ate a bit but shes stopped eating and resonding. The vet said to try for a week and we drive out 35 mins just for her because shs a good vet. I am really stuck on what to do I just want to do what is right. On the one hand I say what if its just pnemonia as the vet suggested and the lungs can be cleared. But on the other I really don't know how much pain she is in. The vet didnt even suggest euthanizing but has in the past when she felt that would help the pet more than a operation in the long term. She is not cruel and Im surprised seeing how Tassy seems to be she did not suggest anything but trying. I slept with her all last night to listen for breathing changes but she was the same. I just want to do whats right and I guess I just have to vent it out. Shes about 12 years old. She was passed on through 3 homes but our home will be her last. We adopted her when she was 9 and a half.
And thoughts or suggestions welcomed Im really at a loss.
Thanks for listening...

I helped her over the bridge. It was my first time staying the whole way through my mum usually stays. It was very hard. Just though I would let you know.
It was her time she went downhill fast today.
Ill miss you so much big "happy dog" friend.
