Hot Spots?
Question: Hello, I have kind of a problem. I have a 2 year old Dachshund . About 2 days ago I noticed a little bump near his eye :( which I think may have came to be do to his eye weeping. When I woke up the next day the bump was elevated right near his eye -- about an inch tall or so. The bump is dry & flaky. It doesn't seem to bother him -- I cleaned it & put vaseline on it. Another one appeared about a day ago on his chest it is wider & not as tall. He doesn't itch it or anything -- truthfully it bothers me more that it does him. My question is -- is this a hot spot has anyone else ever had a similar situation -- (our a/c went out about a week ago & I finally got a new central a/c?) I cleaned the bump again tonight & I guess the liquid antiseptic that I put on it bothered him -- so he itched to get it off & the bump became open & it had blood in it. He stopped itching it as soon as I cleaned the blood off. I am going to the pet store tomorrow to get a petro salve so that it can heal properly -- I just want to know if this is indeed a hot spot?? thanks for any responses!! Answer: I would bring him to a vet, just to be sure. I'm not quite sure what that would be as it's never happened to my dogs ::knock on wood::. However, the only thing I can say is to be careful he doesn't eat the vaseline or antiseptic by licking. You should be okay because it is in a hard to reach place... I figured I would tell you incase he developed anymore. I also believe (not sure, but believe) that vaseline actually dries out the skin more once it wears off. Perhaps the vet can prescribe something more effective. Try calling in first if you can't make it there by tomorrow and don't see this as an emergency. I'm sure someone else here will be able to give you more insight, someone with experience on these Hot Spots I've never heard of. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, good luck!! Answer: Hi, We have a golden retriever and we have suffered through many hot spots. They start off as a red round circle and very very quickly open into oozing sores that get larger by the hour! We now keep an eye out for them and get an antibiotic ointment on them as soon as we see one starting. If we miss it we usually notice our dog licking the area continuously...it spreads so fast it doesn't take long to know it is a problem! The heat and humidity certainly intensify the problem. It doesn't sound like yours is a hot spot because it doesn't sound as though yours spread. Answer: I was at this site earlier and it was an excellent descrition of hot spots and everything we had been through with them. http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/hotspots.html Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
