How big will he get? Dog size rule?
Question: I can't even tell you how many times a day I hear "how big will he get?" with my puppy. I simply don't know. Is there any general "rule"? Such as, at age X months old, a dog is generally half their full grown size. He's 4 months old now, weighing in at approximately 25lbs. He's a mix, so we can't really guess by specific breed weights. Answer: I don't know for sure, but I've heard when they are 6 months, they will be double that size. Someone more knowledgable will be along shortly I'm sure! Answer: My vet always says to take the weight at 4 months old and double it to get an approximate adult size. There's no way to tell for sure, but this will let you know if the dog will be in the small, medium, or large range. In your case, you can expect your dog to be in the 45-55lb range when full-grown (giver or take a few pounds either way ). Answer: OH god, I hope that 6 month rule does not really apply, if it that really is the case, Harley will be about 150lbs. so can not be true.... It really depends on the parents. some dogs grow faster and then slow down, then some dogs have growth spurts for years Answer: If you search, somebody posted a link to a table once to guess the final weight of a dog. Answer: Also, I wouldn't trust places that say "This breed gets this big." We believed that when we got our GSD (my dad's). They said large males might top out of 85 lbs. Our GSD is 150 lbs right now. He's not overweight, but he's huge and barrel chested. Answer: Here are the other threads where this question was asked. The link that Prin mentions above is included in one of the responses. Answer: My vet as well said 4 mth X 2.... he's 6 1/2 mth now and I think he doubled from 4 mth. Answer: My pup Diego is about 50lbs now at 6 months, my vet said that he's going to gain perhaps another 5-10 lbs and that is it. He's a golden/lab cross. Answer: Thanks for the info! Answer: I get that ALOT!!! Especially with Parker. I didn't look at the other threads, but I think it all depends on the breed(s) of the dog. If the breed is one that is full grown at 1 year then I would agree with the 4 mo x 2 thing, but Hazel is 4 months and I am pretty sure that she's going to weigh more than 80 lbs as an adult. Parker is 6 mo and weighed 72 when he went to the vet on Tuesday. Parker could easily double his weight and then some before he's grown, and since Newfs aren't full grown (size wise) until 2 years, I think I'll wait a few more months before I try to guess how much Hazel will weigh full grown.
