Question:
My mom was telling me last night that her son-in-law's dog (she is remarried) is having puppies.

They have a Husky x Lab who is 7 years old and never had puppies before. They had noticed that she was acting weird and started bleeding so they took her to the vet. That was when they found out that she was pregnant and had gone into labour.

As of last night, she had been in labour for 3 days and no puppies yet. The vet told them that they won't do anything until it has been 5 days. Does this seem normal? 5 days of this seems horrible for that poor dog.

She is not eating at all but can't seem to drink enough water.

This is exactly why people should get their dogs fixed, but that it a whole different issue.

I'd get a second opinion from another vet. I know sometimes a dog can be in labor for quite a while, but she is obviously very distressed.

Agreed. Something's not right and another vet needs to be consulted. 3 days is an awful long time, especially since she's not eating AND in pain.

Perhaps the pups are (I so hate to say it) still born and she can't deliver them. It's not uncommon for a first pregnancy.

And I agree with your statement that this shows why a dog/cat/rabbit must be spayed/neutered. Poor thing.

Ok, now I am totally confused. Now they are thinking that the dog isn't in labour, just that she has worms? How could a vet confuse that? Apparently she passed a pile of worms so they are on their way back in to the vet today.

I have to agree with the others that it is hard to mistake a pregnancy for a worm infestation. I think this poor dog should be taken to another vet, not the same one.

Where exactly did she pass this pile of worms from? I'm afraid to ask, but is important to know. Because she has been bleeding and is obviously in pain, a vet visit is definitely in order, but not with this vet!

I am not sure where they came from, I think that they may have just found them on the floor. I suggested that they go to another vet but I am not sure what they decided to do.
