At 12,I would feed him whatever he's been eating and doing well on,unless he's obese.
My oldest cat is 10yrs old,gets a third of a can(small)morning and night and free-feeds on good quality dry food.

I just wanted to add,most cats,at least mine,are nibblers,they don't eat everything in one swallow like doggies
Even the canned food I give them,they'll eat a little and return for more,unless little piggy Vinnie got there first
If you've had the cat for 12 yrs,I'd think you would know his feeding habit,but maybe you just got him??
