My Poor Gertie
Question: Hello everyone.... ive been offline for a while but im back now. I got my Boston Terrier puppy in November. But 2 weeks ago, she took a spill and broke her leg, she has had surgery and is on complete bedrest. When she is brought out of her crate she gets very excited, and because she is not allowed ANY excercise at this point, i have to put her back in her crate. She has started this constant licking, and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what i can do to make her more comfortable with having to stay in bed, and also about the licking. If anyone can help me i would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot :( Answer: Gee, that's a tough one. Are you providing her with lots of different chewies, and rotating them so she's not bored? A small kong stuffed with goodies should keep her busy for quite awhile. Little puppies heal quickly so hopefully she'll be back in action soon! Answer: When Corky broke his leg, he was still a puppy too. He had surgery to put in a pin. Because your puppy is growing, they will sedate him, x-ray, and then put a new cast on several times to allow him to grow. I know you're really anxious about him right now and rightly so. Please be reassured. Corky learned to get around very well and today doesn't have the slightest limp. If you compare his two front legs, the healed one is slightly smaller than the other, but not noticeably. When the cast does come off, you will have to keep him from jumping up or down for 10 days to allow his leg and foot to strengthen and adjust to the activity. We kept Corky on a leash and with us the entire time. Luckily, we didn't have to keep him totally off his feet, so I don't have too much to offer on the bedrest part. Where was the leg broken? Corky broke both leg bones right above the foot. Answer: Actually she doesnt have a cast. It broke right at the elbow, at the top of the leg. During surgery they had to put a pin in and also a screw. She wont get a cast because the break was too high. So I am paranoid about when she is allowed out of her crate because she doesnt have the extra support of a cast. She goes in tomorrow to have her staples removed, so i will update you tomorrow. Thanks for the reassurance. Answer: well...i took gertie to the vet, she got her staples taken out, so that went good. The vet had a concern about the way her leg is healing, she said it looks a bit warped, so im taking her in next week for xrays. Her weight is good. She is very happy, and doesnt seem to be in any pain at all, which is the most important thing. I dont think i have to worry about her being in pain for the rest of her life, so my only concern now is the way it heals, i wouldnt want it to heal wrong and have it interfere with her being a happy energetic, playful dog. I dont know, i have been so upset since all this happened, i just want her to be happy. but thank you for showing your concern, and giving me some great advice. I really appreciate it. Answer: Having pets will always create its own ups and downs. All part of the package! I'm glad for the update. Please keep us informed on her progress. Answer: Juat wanted to let you know that Gertie is doing very well, the vet is saying she will make a great recovery. Thanks for your concern and kind words Answer: That's good news, thank's for telling us Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
