Bailey go in to a LOT of choclate today

Question:
My walking-buddy Bailey is currently at the vets
I picked her up today for our daily walk, she ran out, threw up golden wrapper and brown slimy stuff, ate snow which she usually does not.
I did not think to much about it,she seemed full of energy eager to go for a walk.
She pooped 3 times,also slimy.
When I brought her in to her kitchen,I was met by a mess, wrappers from 4 giant Valentine-Hearts all over the floor...she had eaten tons of choclate
I found her vet, after calling 3 different ones in the area, she told me milk-choclate is not quiet as bad as dark choclate, but still bad.
I called Baileys owner at work, she came right home and took her to the vet.
Now,I am just waiting for them to get back,I am sooo worried about sweet little Bailey
I knew something was very wrong, whe she did not take her usual treats from me,she just wanted to drink water

Answer:
Oh chico2 I hope Bailey will be Ok. Valentines and Halloween are my nighmares with chocolate and dogs.

Answer:
I hope she is ok. Lucky you walk her otherwise her mom may not have found out until too late.

Answer:
I hope she pulls through ok Chico, and I hope her owner now knows better than to leave that much chocolate within a cocker's reach. Sad that these lessons need learned the hard way :( I'll keep you both in my thoughts tonight

Answer:
I hope Bailey will be okay. Joey sends well wishes to his online girl friend too. Joeys tried to steal chocolate too but luckily I've been right there too grab it before hes gotten to it.

Answer:
Poor Bailey! Lucky you walk him every day, or it might have been too late. Chocolate is horrible for little dogs. My great aunt's little doggy got a box of turtles (not even very chocolatey if you think about it) and he died. With Valentine's day coming we really have to be careful.

My fingers are crossed that Bailey gets better.

Answer:
Well,I did not hear from the owner, but they were at the vets for at least 2 hours.
I saw Bailey out in the backyard shortly after, pooping her heart out,I guess since she was outside alone, she'll be ok
I don't think the owner found it important to call me and let me know, she probably thinks of me as a"buddinsky",but I know she appreciates me giving Bailey some exersize, but I spent a few very anxious hours worrying about her
Bailey gets in to everything, they(probably the kids) sometimes leave the cupboards open,I've caught Bailey eating a bag of pretzels,a loaf of bread and other things but this was a LOT of choclate!!
I'll see how she is when I go and get her,how do a I poop-scoop diarrhea

Answer:
Oh Chico2, I can't believe the owners wouldn't even call you to update seeing how worried you were. I hope Bailey is Ok and if I were you I would continue to be the budinsky that youa re and call them After all it was your "budinskying" that alerted you to Baileys chocolate escapade...I say keep it up

Answer:
CPietra,no worries about that,I would not stop taking Bailey for a walk,I've been doing it since the summer.I do it for her,not the owners, they are nice people, just don't talk much
I am not sure why they don't communicate very well, maybe too busy...they did after all give me this beautiful Sandicast Cocker ornament for Christmas.
Hopefully they'll be a little more careful from now on.

Answer:
OH poor Bailey!!

If this were my dog, I wouldn't see you as "Butting in". I would be ever so grateful that you may have saved my dog's life!

Answer:
I just came back from our walk and she seems ok,still eating a lot of snow, though.
The owner had left me a nice note, thanking me.
The vet gave Bailey charcoal and some sort of shot and she'd been vomitting and pooping all night
Today she ate the treats I gave her,so I am sure she'll be fine
Thank's for your concerns
BUT,on the dining-room table, there was more choclate and a bowl of candy ,I moved it out of reach for Bailey.

Answer:
Just wanted to mention,
I know chocolate can be toxic to dogs,
but it seems not all dogs have a reaction.
When my dog was a pup, she lived with my
mom n dad in LAW,
and one day I went over and found her covered
in chocolate!
I asked about it, and they said the granddaughters
chocolate bunny had fallen on the floor and the dog
had eaten in. 1 KG of chocolate!!!
I hunted everywhere and couldnt find more
than a large chocolate stain on the floor.
A 4 lb 6 month old chihuahua pup had eaten 1kg of chocolate!
I watched her, but she never had a single reaction, not even
the runs or anything.
Scary, but not always something to worry about.

Good Luck and I hope the dog is ok!

Answer:
As per pet tip #20, (
A 4 lb 6 month old chihuahua pup had eaten 1kg of chocolate!

the runs or anything.Scary, but not always something to worry about.
Although we are all happy that this one dog in particular had no reaction, I think it is dangerous to say it's not something to worry about. Every year dogs die from eating chocolate. It's a question of what type of chocolate, how much the dog ate, and how large the dog is. Personally I think it is wise to worry when your dog has eaten chocolate. AND if it happened to me I would call my vet immediately, or rush my pet to a vet. Just my 2 cents.

Answer:
When I was about 14 years old, my childhood dog ate a bunch of Hershey's Kisses around Christmastime while we were out. My mom always had a routine before we left and something distracted her and she didn't pick a few things up out of the way. Anyway, we of course went to the vet immediately and with his size being bigger we were to just watch him and call the vet if certain changes occurred -- no matter what time of night. Anyway, the dog was fine, but the result was pretty silver shimmery wrappers in the moonlight of the backyard! Merry Christmas!

Answer:
Bailey being a Cocker-Spaniel,definetly showed signs of a reaction, vomiting and diarrhea, acting almost as if she was high on something, drinking water, eating snow like crazy
She probably ate 3lb's of choclate(and wrapper)each choclate-heart weighing 1lb,it was Cadbury Milkchoclate(one of my favourites!).

Answer:
Always worry when a dog eats chocolate.

The darker the chocolate the higher the risk but some dogs may have a severe reaction with the milk chocolate just as they would with the dark.
A dog could eat a whole bunny one day with no reaction and then eat a chocolate chip the next and die. You just never know and another item not to risk.

As with any other food item that not enough is known about like grapes/ raisins, always treat consumption as severe.

There will be exceptions and some dogs may not have a reaction and that dog was very lucky but at the same time many die from this so it is something to worry about.

*If your dog eats any amount of chocolate or other toxic item, contact or see your vet immediately* Don't wait and see as your dog may not be so lucky.

Joey will eat anything too I think its a cocker thing. Last night I was throwing some chicken bones in the garbage and the little bugger. Came up and grabbed one - I had to literally pry it out of his mouth. IF Joey saw those chocolates too he would go for it too. I am usually pretty good but he does get the odd scrab the kids or I drop on the floor. IT takes like a 1/2 second to see something on the floor and devour it.

Just curious how bad are Timbits (donuts) for dogs - my boss at work brings home Timbits for her dog.

Answer:
Chico, I think that's just wonderful you take Bailey out for walks everyday! I do it for her,not the owners
Exactly what I figured!

Bailey is a very lucky girl to have you around! It could have been to late for her by the time her owners got home from work and then got her medical attention. They should have called you to give you an update and to say Thank you - afterall, you could have prevented something far worse for Bailey.

Answer:
On Christmas day Hunter ate a whole large bag of M&M's. He also ate some foil wrapped chocolate candy. I was cooking breakfast but didn't notice him with his head in the bowl. My daughter's boyfriend caught him looking very guilty and told me.
He was drinking lots of water and knowing that I wouldn't be able to get a hold of a vet quickly being that it was Christmas morning, went on the net and found a recipe to induce vomiting. I made the mixture, peroxide and water, and gave it to him which made him vomit three times. He was fine afterwards. Thankfully we found out that he had eaten chocolate within minutes so it did not have time to get into his system.
It was a very scary experience.

Answer:
Chico, I wish you lived closer to me! I would LOVE for you to come walk my dog in the afternoons while I was at work! Not to charge me is an extra bonus! I have a dogwalker every afternoon for an hour, she charges me $18 a walk!!!

Answer:
Coppersmom thank's! But I am in no way any kind of hero Sure,I love Bailey, but I needed an incentive to get walking and my promise to Bailey gets me out in any weather
I've known her since she was a wee puppy..
The owner is not a bad owner, she loves her dog,but she practically works from 7am-7pm,not leaving much time for Bailey.

Joey Cockersmommy, when we walk,Bailey is constantly sniffing the ground for something to eat, luckily I have no problems taking whatever she finds out of her mouth.
I am used to finicky cats, who don't put anything strange in their mouths
