Mistreatment Of Dog At Park

Question:
I was at the park today with Belle and some old bag hit her dog on the head when he didnt do what she wanted (It looked like they hit him very hard). He was on a leash and trying to play with the dogs and wouldnt relax. Then her daughter (10 years or so?) hit the dog for no reason on the head. twice. I couldnt believe it. I thougth they were heading to the parking lot so I got there and grabbed a pen to write down there liscense plate to report them but unfortunatly I lost them. What should I do if I run into them again or a similar situation. My first instinct was to go over there and try to beat them all up, kids included, but I figured that wouldnt solve anything. Im wondering if I should go talk to them, or yell at them or take there dog (Which I wanted to do after I beat them all up) I was alone at this time and out numbered by them 6 to 1 with no cell phone. Any sugestions? Im so mad.

Answer:
Never try to handle a situation like this alone, you may be the next victim. Call the police ASAP!

I would come up there to help you but, I'm running out of places to hide the bodies myself..LOL!

Answer:
Hi Sarah

I was in a very similar situation once and before I knew it, I was almost attacked and bitten by the very dog that I had jumped in to protect. Don't forget that these violent morons are actually unconditionally protected and loved by their dogs, unfortunately I almost learned the hard way.

Thankfully you did not.

But it is maddening, I hear ya.

Answer:
There isn't much you can do. I witnessed extreme abuse as did others in the park. We all caught up in the parking lot as the owner threw the dog in the back of the truck and started to leave. He told me to get out of the way. I told him he could talk to me or talk to the police he said - move. A girl handed me a pen - I wrote down the plate asked one more time and he still said move.

The police arrived - they sent the Humane society to the house. They said they can only really check for food and water - the basic needs. I asked if I could see the officers gun - he politly refused. I discussed it with my girlfriend and she approved of my plan if the jerk showed up again.

If it happened again I think I would simply steal the dog. I haven't seen him in that park since. The issue was that when his dog saw mine he took off, this idiot came running after him. When he finally returned he was smacked a few times, shaken, dragged by the neck (feet off the ground) and then thrown into the back of the truck.

If that dog ever shows up after my dog again I think we are going for a run...I am partially deaf and may not hear the owner chasing us. He was an older obese angry looking guy. I don't think he'd be hard to lose. Then I will turn around and SUPRISE - I have found a purebred Springer Spanial dog...there's a collar but no tags (must of fell off in the bush). I better find it a home. I call a friend on my cell. They pick us up. Later that day I pick up my SUV. A cop will pull up. No sir I didn't see a dog. Say again - I'm deaf in this ear. I'm allowed to leave.

Suddenly I'm cured - I can hear again. Praise Jesus. Then he goes to the illegal dog park with us on the weekend. Sooner of later we find him a home...far away from that first park.
.
Oh and what was I going to say if he did get out of the truck. I was going to explain that my dog used to do that as a pup too. Then I would of offered to work the dog with him and if he ever gets frustrated again...call me.
.

No Worries we had no idea this was going to happen, It was after you left, about a half hour or so right before we were going to leave. I have no idea what kind of dog it was. From what I remember It looked like Brick with lighter red and longer hair. I was going to say something to them but I was afraid of what would happen behind closed doors, because Im sure they would take it out on the dog for not listening. I also know my emotions would get the best of me and I would have a hard time remaining calm.

They had it on the leash the whole time but I was tempted to go meet the dog and pet it and throw Belles leash on him, remove his and run like hell. If I see them again I probably wont hold back. Belle and I can out run all of them Im sure. Do you know the consequences of stealing a persons dog if you get caught? I love your solution twodogsandacat really, its in the best interest of the dog. Thanks for all your help, I was pissed off at myself for a while because I ended up doing nothing.

Yes,you can be charged.Stealing a persons dog is theft. This is where I have to say do not take matters into your own hands. At times it can get ugly. And I have seen it a few times.Get a licence plate #,remember what the person looks like, what kind of dog it is.Call the Humane Society,Police.Tell the Police you want to lodge a formal complaint about an abuse on a dog that you witnessed. If you can, follow this person home to see where they live.

I figured you can be charged. I know exactly what the whole family looks like, I was hoping to follow the family or get a liscense plate, but unfortunatly I lost them. Next time will be different. I will be right on their heels. Thanks for your suggestions, Ill hold off on stealing their dog, it will be used as a last resort.

Answer:
My case was different. I had a lure(my dog), he had a pup that wouldn't listen, I wouldn't have to be within a hundred feet of the jerk, had nearby woods that we were very familiar with and I would only 'steal' it if I could possibly make it look like I didn't steal it. Running with my dog isn't illegal. Attaching a leash to another dog is.

You plan is right in their face, can not be a case of 'it followed me home' and will get you arrested.

So no do not attempt to steal the dog it is against the law. Call the police and call FACs too. Maybe the child is only doing what is done to him. Some people don't like uninvited guests in their homes and if they give the SPCA a hard time an officer will assist. Better have all the ducks in a row too..whatever they see in that home could be used against them.

Hopefully karma will catch up with them. Maybe one day they come in for a job interview and you can start the interview with 'You own a dog don't you'.

A friend's brother interviewed someone who just two days before illegally checked her (extremly hard) in a friendly game of coed hockey. She was pretty abusive when others challenged her about it too. He started the interview with 'So haven't I seen you at the arena'. Believe in karma.

When it came down to it, I would never steal a persons dog unless it was hurt really bad and needed help. I just get so mad thinking about it that I come up with all these plans, scenario's and what ifs, It helps me sleep at night. Im just venting!

Answer:
I understand I truly do. However there are laws we have to follow. Unless your illegal actions can be justified it really is hard to just walk away and you don't have to. The police we dealt with felt the same way, almost powerless but insisted we call again if we see it again. It has to be intimidating or at least a hassle to have an uniformed police officer at your door and a cruiser in your driveway('splain to the neighbour Lucy -why were the police at your house?).

It does help to think it through though. To plan ahead. Draw up scenarios. In another recent post regarding drugging a puppy the writer went through all the worst case scenarios and in the end the dogs owner was......receptive. It just goes to show you.

As I mentioned I understood the frustration of the owner and really would of offered to help train that pup on the recall. I also know from experience that an open field isn't the place to start teaching it.

I thought it wasn't the best place to train a dog aswell. I would have loved to help her, unfortuanatly I havn't a clue about training in recall, or any training other then potty training. I got lucky with Belle, she always came to me and was somewhat trained before I got her except potty trained, but she has that mastered now. I thought about calling, and would have if I had a cell, I was waiting to jot down a liscense plate and call the spca or city or both, but lost them. I think if there is a next time I will just follow them, that way I will have a better chance of getting a liscense plate or address.
