Cats or dogs first?

Question:
I have a friend who wants to get two cats and two Kangal dogs. She wanted to know what is the best way to ensure the cats and dogs get along. She has decided to wait a year or so between dogs since it will make for easier training, but is trying to decide when to adopt the cats. Should she get the cats first then bring in a dog, or get the dogs first, or get the cats at the same time as the first dog? She wanted to know because she has a puppy reserved for a Fall litter but is thinking of adopting a kitten now and was wondering if she should wait or not. I thought I'd ask here to see what people thought!

Answer:
with both my other dogs the cats were first. If she is getting a puppy it really does not mattter, she will have to train it either way to leave the cats alone

Answer:
If someone wants dogs and cats, kittens are the best choice since they will adapt easily to a dog. She will just need to supervise to make sure the kitten is not injured by the puppy.

Another option is to adopt cats who have lived with dogs and have no problem with them. Adult cats who have never been exposed to dogs, and adult cats and puppies are a very poor combination.

If she's getting puppies, it's going to be a lot work either way.

If I were going to do this, I would get the two kittens and puppy now. Then when she brings in a second puppy, the cats will already be used to puppy/dog.

I hope your friend understands what she's getting with one of these huge, powerful guardian dogs!

Answer:
Well she has decided to go ahead and get one kitten now as they have one in mind which is used to dogs. Hopefully all will go well with that!

Me too! Wouldn't be my choice but they seem to know what they're getting into, they've met quite a few of them and love the breed and have been planning on getting two Kangals for quite some time now. They're moving to acreage with tonnes of room for the dogs to run around on. They also found a great breeder who will help them along with training and whatnot.
