Dog Sitting...Dog won't sleep!

Question:
[F]Any suggestions? I am dog sitting my BIL's 3yr old Golden for a "few" days while the are having a baby.

I picked him up yesterday noon and we went straight to the woods with my two for a good 1.5 hr run. Then we came home. He has not stopped panting and I don't think he slept more than three hours last night and he shows no signs of fatigue this morning. He does know me and was very excited when he saw me yesterday as I have often taken him to the woods with us. This is his first sleepover here tho.

He is otherwise very happy. Tail wagging, eating very well. Typical retriever...always has to have a toy in his mouth but has not chewed anything that is not a toy. Wants to follow me everywhere, but that is understandable. It is just the lack of sleep (for ALL of us!!!). Someone tell me he will settle down and sleep eventually. I realize he is anxious but he has to sleep at some point, doesn't he? Do you think this "rescue remedy" that I have seen mentioned here would help?

As I said, any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:
In college I dogsat 2 german shepherds and a cat that were the same way, when their mom wasn't home, it was up all night and day and the next night and the next day. Given all 3 had healthy appetites, were interested in walks and their toys and were playful as ever, I chalked it up to the stress of their mom being gone, and me being there. I'd say if he's still having trouble sleeping in another day or so, try out Rescue Remedy, but I suspect he's just caught up in the excitement and stress. Good luck and hope you catch some zzzzzz's!

Answer:
The rescue remedy will not work it takes a while to get into the dogs system and you only have him for a few days. He is just anxious and misses his family. Buddy does this even when we go visiting he paces around and it takes a little while till he will lay down. But I have had this problem with other dogs I have dog sat. Just try and make him feel comfortable and safe. He is just worried they are not coming back. Give him a little extra attention, but nothing to worry about and you will get sleep soon
