Is Boo fat?
Question: I was taking pics (as usual) and next to the chunky lab staying with us, Boo was looking a little chunky too... What do you all think? I know the charts and all that, but sometimes it's hard to judge when it's your own baby. I put a poll, so you can remain anonymous. Answer: See next to skinny Jemma, he's definitely not as trim, but then she's crazy fit. Answer: Here's another view of them both from 2 weeks ago. (Boo is on the right) Maybe it's the lighting from tonight (the pic above) that makes him look chunkier? Answer: I think he is just fine. It's hard to compare with him next to Jemma, they are two different dogs. He's a bigger dog than Jemma, but I think he is just perfect! Answer: Not knowing too much about larger dogs,I would still say he looks wonderful, just a little bulkier build than Jemma. Is Boo mixed with Rottie?Stupid question probably, but his stance looks like my former neighbors Rottie.. Answer: I never noticed that before, he does have a rottie stance. Answer: We can't answer that Prin = its like that commercial where the women says to the husband "does this dress make me look fat" and he replys "you betcha" cracks me up everytime. Anyways I think Boo looks fine I agree with everyone that he is a bit of a heavier build than Jemma. I do not think Boo looks fat - the first pictures doesn't do him justice (bad lighting, bad stance, uneven ground). I think with dogs that have extreme tucks, when they do look boxy its even more of a shock (Dodger's the same way - he goes from a 30" girth to a 20" waist, so when I get a boxy look, I automatically think he's fat) Answer: I think he looks great. But the true test is to feel him. Can you feel his ribs? Good. Can you see his ribs? :( Not good. Can you feel is spine or hip points? not so good. If he has too much squishy stuff on his ribs he could afford to lose some weight. You want them to be light weight and fit, but not so thin that they have no reserves and not so fat that it effects their joints, heart and lungs. Answer: Boo is so boney, even when he's chunky. His hip bones protrude so far out. He's got a funny bone structure. Like the base of his rib cage isn't round at all. He almost comes to a point. Like his chest is very deep but very narrow, so using his ribs or any of his bones to judge his weight is a little awkward... You laugh, but I was wondering all morning how I would react if you all called him fat... No, no rottie in there. If you saw him in person you'd say there wasn't. He's just standing on a bit of a hill in that one, so his back paws are holding him up. He's too tall and lanky. He's as tall as a small dane, but only 87 lbs. Answer: He looks good to me. You can`t compare him to Jemma as they have different mixes in them. Answer: I don't think you have anything to worry about Prin, he looks perfectly healthy and given his size and bone construction, I think you'd have a lot of warning if he ever went portly Answer: I just worry too much because my childhood lab was so fat, and always was and I don't want Jemma and Boo to end up like that. Our old lab would find food somewhere if we ever put her on a diet. She even went so far as to eat a whole 18kg (40lb) bag of dog food in one shot. Jemma and Boo aren't as gluttony, but I never want them to lose their young bodies. Answer: Originally Posted by Prin Here's another view of them both from 2 weeks ago. Is that Jemma in the background?? is she carrying a twig ON her nose?? that's what it looks like heehehe I think Boo looks ok. But i have a bad sense of telling when an animal is fat. I met up with a friend who has a German shepherd, and i thought she was sickly skinny, but apparently not. Maybe boo has gained some winter fat ...umm not that he IS fat.. Answer: LOL nooo, it's in her mouth. She's not that talented...lol "Look mummy! I can run and balance the stick! Are you watching? Mummy? Are you watching?!" Hmm... Winter weight eh? So does that disappear in the spring? Does it just melt away? Answer: He's not fat, he's undertall.... Just kidding, he looks great to me. Answer: LOL No, he's not undertall. He's very tall. Too tall sometimes. It's hard to tell if he's getting chubby too, because when we got him, he had almost no fur and his fur is just getting thicker and thicker, so it hides his bones better now and makes him look stalkier. But just as his fur getting thicker is a gradual thing, getting chubby is too and then all of a sudden, I'm thinking "Whoa! Where did my Boo go? What did that fat dog do with my big skinny Boo!?"
