Flea Medicine

Question:
I have been told that there are some flea medicine that are toxic to cats and dogs. The type of flea medicine I give my cats is called Sergent's Silver and the main active ingredients in it is Etofenprox. And the one I use for my dogs is Scratchex and the main active ingredients is Permethrin and Pyriproxyfen. I was wondering if any of these are toxic to dogs and cats. If so can you please tell me which flea medicine is the best. I would really appreciate the help...

Answer:
Please don't buy flea medicine over the counter. Many of them are loaded with pesticides... for example, a flea collar has deet in it so will constantly be putting poison into your pet.

Buy advantage from your vet. You don't need a prescription and it's much safer.

Answer:
Agree. Don't bother. Most over the counter flea meds are useless and others are deadly, like Hartz flea drops for cats.

You're not saving any money, because you'll have to go to the vet anyway, so it will cost more in the long run.

Answer:
Permethrins are considered very toxic in greys to to their small kidney size, so it can be assumed toxic to all pets

What is recommend if someone wants to go with a spray on their grey is ones with pyrethrins, these are made from marigolds

It can be found in a product line called Adams. but understand if your home has an infestation your pets will continually be re-infected

Personally I prefer going to the vet and getting advantage, it will sterilize the fleas so they are unable to reproduce if all pets are treated.
