Question:
Okay, here's the situation . . . I'm in a second floor apartment and since it's a converted office building, the floors are higher than they normally would be. There's no air conditioning (eek!) and it regularly reaches 90 to 100 degrees in the summer here.

I'm worried that if I open the windows to get a breeze, the kitties will lean on or claw at the window screen until it falls out or tears. :( They're very tall windows and the kitties regularly stand up on their hind legs and lean against the glass to watch birds.

So I'm trying to think of alternative ways to keep the apartment cool. Fans, maybe?

I once lived in an ATTIC apartment - no AC. I used those window-fans.. so the window closed with the fan in it - sorta wedges the fan in the window (this making sense?). I had some blowing OUT on the hot side of the apt (sunny) and others blowing IN on the shady side. it kept a breeze going through, and my cats out of the windows (which overlooked a main street).

I also got a kitty fountain, one of those water bowls that circulates water on the advice of my vet... it enticed my cat to drink more - which kept her well hydrated on those very hot days.

I routinely leave my windows open in my house now, and never had them clawed or broken (by leaning). My cats are anything but dainty... furry piglets lounging in my windows...

This is on the outside of my screen doors, helps with dog and cat claws, and stops Boobear from coming back in!! You might be able to rig something like this up inside, and get that fresh air! The squares are approx 1/2 inch. Rabbit screening is what I think it is.

When we had a cat who would just insert one claw and rip open the screens when he felt like going out, we had the nylon screen replaced with aluminum.

You can by the aluminum screening at any hard-ware store and they are easy to install.

Hi there, my mother-in-law had to get burglar secure windows, metal secures somehow to the window so that nobody 'can get in or out' but it lets you leave windows open and secure, she got them for her dog that kept going through the screen doors after the stray cats(which they have alot of), I think you can get them at Home Hardware, Canadian Tire and places like that not sure how much $ but I hope this helps

I used L brackets and little metal screws. One bracket per corner. My screens are also aluminum, but the cats claws still do a number on them, but with 6...that's to be expected!
