Help with Petfinder please...

Question:
I have recently found petfinder.com due to different links found here. My problem is when I try to search for a black and white cocker spaniel in my area it gives me the US searches also. Now I dont want to try and sort through a few thousand ads if I dont have to. Does anyone have any tips?? I am frustrated as I type in my postal code, my nearest city and ON for Ontario and still the first page shows American posts. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

When that happens, it's because the type of dog you are looking for is not to be found in that area.

Answer:
Lucky, when I do put in my postal code it does show dogs in Ontario but not until Ive scanned through a few pages...hmmmm. Ill try the other link you gave me though. Thanks for the info.

Answer:
I also live in Ontario. After you typed in your postal code, did you check off in the section that lists Regional, Expanded, etc.? That might help.

Answer:
I've had the same problem for the past months, even if you choose regional,it gives you americain rescues.

Answer:
Yes, for awhile it's been giving every animal in North America, but still always gives me the city I typed in first (if there are any of that type pet available)

If you want something so specific and not terribly common - black and white cocker spaniel - you may have to travel quite a distance, or adjust your requirements.

Answer:
Instead of "regional" or "expanded", choose "national" for the search. It will list the pets in closest to furthest order from your postal code, excluding any pets from outside the country.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Oh, also remember to go to the advanced search page rather than searching from the front page. I find that the "national" search option on the front page of petfinder doesn't work to exclude american pets, only the one on the advanced search page works.

Can you tell I just found my perfect pet on petfinder?

Answer:
If you choose national, it puts mainly the closest ones to you on the first few pages.
Currently, there aren't all that many cockers in Ontario to choose from. That is why you are getting such sketchy results.

Answer:
That's a good idea though. If the problem is beasties from the US popping up in your search where they shouldn't be, eliminating the US from the search would probably help.

Answer:
Thanks for the hints every one. I will try clicking on national this time. I dont put "black and white" in my search lol...just cocker spaniel. I wish there was a way to pick either/or Canada or the US only. I dont mind driving a few hours away..put the way ive been trying to seach makes it absolutely nerve wracking, so Ill try the helpful hints!! Thanks a bunch everyone!!
