Cocker Spaniel teeth
Question: Hi, I'm getting a cocker spaniel puppy on feb 12th. I got her dog tooth paste and a dog tooth brush and i was just wondering how many times a month i should brush her teeth. Answer: Hello Well, if she's just a puppy, what you have to do is get her used to it, since she's going to lose all those teeth eventually. Start super gently, with you finger initially, only one side at a time if necessary. Get her used to being handled. Don't forget, make it a pleasant experience every time. If she stays quiet, you stop before she starts fussing and praise her. Then, you do it with the brush and water only. When she's used to it, you add the toothpaste. You have plenty of time... When she gets her adult teeth, you brush them ideally daily. But even a couple of times a week will help. I'm assuming you got a doggie toothbrush, which should be quite gentle, and doggie toothpaste. Never use the human stuff. They don't spit it out like we do and it's very irritating to the stomach. Wow, I didn't know when I started this was gonna turn into a complete lecture. Sorry if I gave you more than you wanted... Lyne Answer: Hi and Welcome!! Ideally you should be brushing your dogs teeth everyday, some people do it right after their own. You really don't want to wait more than 2-3 days, between brushings, as that is how long it takes plaque to harden thus making your efforts ineffective. Are you gettting a puppy? If so and he will be teething, then use your finger at first, not the toothbrush, on his sensitive gums to get him/her used to the idea. Same for an adult dog that is not used to the concept. Good luck and let us know. (I think I already asked you for pics on another thread, so I'll just keep quiet ) Answer: Ideally you should brush your dog's teeth twice a day to prevent plaque from forming. I know that this sounds like a lot of work so do it as often as possible. Anything will help!
