microchipping

Question:
How does this work?

The dog we are getting does not have one yet that I have heard of. I was planning on making a vet visit for this week for a check up, and to get a microchip.

Do we get a choice of kinds? What does it cost? Do you pay for monitering it? Or just pay once?

We need a microchip for discounts on insurance, and to get a cheaper license (also for peice of mind!!).

New dog mommy needs advice!!!

Answer:
Congrats raingirl on your new addition!! I know you've been soooo patient waiting till the time was right to get a dog!! Congrats!!!

Brick has a microchip, he got it when he was neutered, before we picked him up from the Pound. The vet injects a small piece of "rice" between the shoulder blades, and then the scanner uses it to find his/her special ID #. I guess you could call around to vets to see what type they use, as I know some vet scanners don't read all brands of microchips. His microchip was included in his adoption fee, so I'm not sure what they are by themselves. When you call the vet to make an appt., just ask them!!

There are several companies that monitor the microchips...I used to use PetNet but they went out of business, so now I use 24 Pet watch. It is free, and you get a discount if you use PetCare insurance. Petlynx is another one out there, but they charge $30 for registering and I THINK there is a yearly upkeep fee. I opted for the free one!!

What kind of dog did you get?? I know there is probably a thread somewhere, but I'm too lazy to look!!! LOL
Hope that helps!!!

Answer:
Here is a link to the thread.
We should be getting him tonight, providing something doesn't go completely wrong!!

I will ask the vet when I make an appointment then.

Answer:
Phoebe is microchipped, too. Had it done when she was spayed. It cost about $45 to have it inserted (a chip about the size of a grain of rice between the shoulder blades). No on-going fees, it's a one-time deal. Our vet uses Avid.

Answer:
In some cases, the vet will also tattoo the ear when the chip is implanted. The tattoo provides the chip details in case the chip cannot be read.
