Fishy Funerals...

Question:
We have had so much trouble with our fishtank....mostly all our fault as it is our first too. We had two fishy funerals this week. But we went in and got some good advice from PetSmart this weekend and hopefully will be able to prevent any more unnecessary suffering. I also guess the fish are growing on me, I find them kinda relaxing to watch (they seem to have the opposite affect on the cats of course)... so I got a little 1 gallon tank and a betta fishy of my own (breaks my heart to see them at the pet store in those little plastic containers! For the first little while it was like he didn't realize he didn't have to swim in small circles anymore. I'll have to see if I can get fishy pics so you can all see his pretty fins!

Answer:
I have two Bettas. Achmed and Pierre.
I started with one gallon bowls, then I got two gallon ones. I worry about them not having stimulating enough environments so I move their bowls around and they get different scenery.
I also have a clean river rock in each bowl, and plants. They like to hang in the leaves.

Next time I get a Betta, I will be spending more than $1.99 at PetsMart, I am getting one of this woman's fancy Bettas.

Answer:
Wow neat website, those are some fancy fish! I'll prob stick to just one for now... but I would like to find him a gal. I have a small plant, a rock and waterfall decoration and some gravel in mine....and this guy is loving it so far. The one they had in a bowl at petsmart looked miserable, the girl at the cash said it hardly even swims....this guy is all over the place! And when I turn the light on he likes to try to fight his reflection! Haven't named him yet though.... any of them actually, I guess we should.

Answer:
Do you have a filter for your fishy? Be careful.....with their long fins, they'll get stuck to the filter!!! When I first started with fish, I had fatalities too! I was over feeding them!! The directions on the fish food said feed small amounts a few times daily! I learned a new rule for this.....Happy fish are hungry fish! And it is so true! Never had a problem since!

I now have 2 Oscars-no names :( ! They are about 5-6 inches long and beautiful! One of these days I'll post pics

Good Luck with your new Betta!

Answer:
Wow! Those are some seriously beautiful fish! I'd love to get one, but the molly we recently adopted (inherited?) won't tolerate any tankmates other than the sailfin pleco we put in there to keep the polution to a minimum (and BOY! can those mollies polute!! ).

Answer:
Aren't those gorgeous fancy Bettas?
Mine are in seperate bowls, sometimes I put their bowls together so they can fan out and get brave. I feel sorry for the ones in teeny bowls too.
I feed mine once a day, the floating food stays on the surface for a long long time. I siphon the cruddy stuff from the bottom of their bowls weekly, and replace 1/3-1/2 the water.
So far so good, I've had them since early last summer and I guess they are healthy. They make lots of little bubble nests, which is a sign of healthy male Bettas, I am told.
